to peer into prams?

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 21/04/2010 22:36

I just can't stop myself peering into prams and pushchairs and admiring babies!

My youngest is 11 and I find I have turned into that perimenopausal woman in the supermarket saying How old? How lovely! How quickly they grow up!

AIBU or AI being scary?

Please advise and I will try to modify my behaviour accordingly.

YANBU, I do it myself and I love it when other people do it to my DC too

Wanderingsheep · 21/04/2010 22:39

Nah, not scary. I like it when people take an interest in DD. I'm sure people are usually very proud when you comment on how lovely their DC are.

GlastonburyGoddess · 21/04/2010 22:40

I dont think yabu, although Id say gauge the mother first-if she looks harrassed/stressed a quick peek and a "what a beautiful baby" would probably make her day, whereas a premenopausal woman going on for 10 minutes about them growing up quick what probably not

thisisyesterday · 21/04/2010 22:41

no you aren't being unreasonable!
i always liked it when people asked me about my babies. doesn't happen much now, youngest is 10 months

i do it to other people though and secretly wish i could give their babies a big squishy cuddle! lol

GlastonburyGoddess · 21/04/2010 22:41

what would

hatwoman · 21/04/2010 22:46

I'll never forget the joy of having a stranger chat to me about dd1 and tell me how beautiful she was. problem is, I have learned, that I have become so intolerably soppy in my later years, that if I try to pass such similar compliments on I find myself welling up. ffs woman get a grip. I don;t do it for fear of looking like an utter loon.

Hahaaa- I remember when I had my first baby, a couple of old dears came up to the pram for a nosey in a shopping centre. The pram was one of those travel systems which had a hood at the parent's end, but also a hood over the carseat attachment in which the baby faced towards me, iyswim. I suppose that to them, it looked a bit like a double pram for twins. Anyway, they practically rugby-tackled each other to be first to get a gander, and then literally huffed off, saying "Bah, it's only one!"

Sorry to have disappointed you!

itsybitsy08 · 21/04/2010 23:00

YANBU!
When i had DD i had a bit of a tough time for the first few months! It would really brighten my day when people looked into her pram and commented how lovley she was! It reminded me that maybe i wasnt doing too badly after all if people thought she was lovley and it was nice to have that little bit interaction with a fellow adult after being on my own all day!

2shoes · 21/04/2010 23:01

yanbu
I do it all the time...and I am not even broody or into babies

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 21/04/2010 23:04

itsy
i found that more people were interested in my new puppy than any of my 4 Dc so since then have made a point of talking to new mums and their babes as life can be lonely and hard as new parent.
life's odd sometimes.

Nah YANBU, I have 3dc and I still have to look into a pram and coo lol. I think that every dc has a peak of cuteness, and it's different for each one. My dd had most attention from 6-18 months, she was very precocious and liked an audience. My ds1 was more subdued and only garnered a following from 18 months with his "bus ladies" lol. It remains to be seen for ds2, although he is super cute already, he doesn't actually do much, being 6mo old and all.

It's odd though dd got much more attention and compliments as a young child than ds1 ever did. No idea why tbh, maybe because she was more advanced/attention seeking than ds.

My youngest is 6 mo and I still get a lot of compliments and pram peerage, always appreciated btw.

itsybitsy08 · 21/04/2010 23:19

Yes it can and yes life is odd sometimes!
I try too and im sure you make some peoples day, shame there are not more like you! Such a small thing can make a big difference sometimes

CoinOperatedGirl · 21/04/2010 23:21

Has anyone else had the pressing of coins into (new)babies palms? Maybe it's a northern thing. I used to come home with a pram full of dosh

NonnoMum · 21/04/2010 23:26

No, no, YANBU. That's what prams are for (oh, as well as transporting babies around...)

And, like the huffy old ladies with the travel system, isn't it soooo much more fun when it's twins.

And I saw an ordinary blokey bloke (white van man type) practically PASS OUT with joy and delight when there were newborn triplets in Tescos!!!

(Just keep boney fingers away from the babes, OK?)

CoinOperatedGirl · 21/04/2010 23:27

Also the other day there was a couple obviously on the first journey out post baby in waitrose. She was walking gingerly with a semi bump wth tiny babe in car seat (attentive daddy hovering). I wanted to follow her and tell her it'll all be alright lol. It took me right back to my first tentative supermarket journeys.

cornsilk · 21/04/2010 23:46

I never do that.Other people's babies are boring aren't they? All the old dears thought ds1 was a girl when he was in his pram even though he was usually in blue. When I told them he was actually a boy they would look doubtful. One man complained that his eyelashes were wasted on him!

Meglet · 21/04/2010 23:48

yanbu. I am always trying to peek too.

jaggythistle · 22/04/2010 00:01

CoinOperatedGirl - yup, when DH took DS out he only got as far as the next door neighbours before getting some money in the pram.

When I took him to work the ladies at reception put coins in his car seat.

He is a very smiley boy (7mo now)and it is nice when people seem to enjoy his wee happy face, so YANBU.

Firawla · 22/04/2010 00:03

yanbu its nice

Casmama · 22/04/2010 00:11

It's lovely, but agree with nonnomum - look but don't touch!

YanknCock · 22/04/2010 00:11

How far north do you have to be do get money in the pram?

YanknCock · 22/04/2010 00:13

oh and YANBU

DS is 8 months soon and a complete attention seeker. He stares at people and shouts until they look at him, then does a cheeky grin and sometimes pretends to be bashful. I really enjoy it now, but know it won't last. Soon enough he'll be a tantruming toddler.

Slugbrains · 22/04/2010 00:18

Its an old tradition to cross a baby's palm with silver is supposed to bring good luck. Ds had his palm crossed with coins when we had the adventure of being in manchester during the fate full football match. One of the supporters so impressed that he could sleep through all the air horns! (he would have been about 3 1/2 or 4 at the time)

chegirlWILLbeserene · 22/04/2010 17:37

I do it all the time too. In fact I HATE those bloody travel systems because the baby is hidden in the depths of a car seat with the hood pulled over them - wheres the fun in that!?

I am the same with dogs and cats though. i cant walk down the street without making encouraging noises at some small creature.

I have a newborn and love the fact that it takes me an age to get round Morrisons because of all the clucking and ooooing.
