Feels so recent

YABU - it's on Channel 5.

MitchyInge · 21/04/2010 19:01

Is it? Heh, sorry BBC. Channel 5 always was about football, films and fucking originally - perhaps this represents new level of maturity

But it is BBC look

actually you're both right there is also a programme on Channel 5 tonight "Crimes that shook the world"

scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 19:10

I don't think it will be distasteful. It's important to keep these issues in people's minds

southeastastra · 21/04/2010 19:11

not really, they dramatise lots of recent murders don't they

DilysPrice · 21/04/2010 19:11

Four of the five families support it I think - they seem to have gone to great lengths to make it about the women themselves rather than just a crime shocker.

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/04/2010 19:13

Well, I hope the article was correct and it will be about '5 women murdered', not '5 prostitutes murdered' like it was reported at the time.

toccatanfudge · 21/04/2010 19:14

well it probably depends on which programme the OP is talking about the BBC one or this one

WolframAlpha · 21/04/2010 19:16

I have no idea if it's distasteful - it hasn't been broadcast yet.

Goingspare · 21/04/2010 19:18

The BBC drama sounds very responsible, if the publicity is correct. It does feel very recent still, doesn't it? I was surprised to see that it was as long ago as 2006.

MitchyInge · 25/04/2010 15:05

Just read Libby Purves (love her) thing about it in RT, it actually sounds really good so I was BU if she is right about it. Made me cry just reading it though so not sure about watching it.

I'm going to watch it. Have read about it in the paper, the families are behind it and I think it is done from the angle of these poor women being sucked into prostitution for horrible reasons.

purpleturtle · 25/04/2010 18:45

I'm not especially happy that my DC saw the trailer at 6.15pm.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 25/04/2010 18:50

I don't know. If it is making entertainment out of people's pain then that's wrong.

However, if it is made well and shows people that these women were loved, were valuable, mattered, instead of being seen as 'just prostitutes', like somehow they didn't matter as much - because people (not all people, just 'people' ) think like that, don't they? It's not as shocking / bad / dreadful if the victim is a prostitute?

Well it IS! And if this programme shows that these were just poor young lasses who got into bad situations, then good.

SuSylvester · 25/04/2010 18:52

big article in times
parents very pro the show

then times said maybe a bit too uch - shows kids as a bit too perfect etc - affected by memory not reality

ELCSadvice · 25/04/2010 18:53

I think I will watch it.

It's about these women's lives. We don't really see anything in the media that 'humanises' prostitutes and I think this is a good thing to do from that point of view.

lottiejenkins · 25/04/2010 19:03

I will be watching. I live 25 miles outside Ipswich and i remember the panic it caused at the time. We were all terrified to go out at night and my son's carer was escorted to and from her car when she went to the gym which is off Portman Road. I know a lady who was a neighbour of Paula Clanells and Paula went to her in tears when her children were taken into care.

beanlet · 25/04/2010 20:49

It's called "Five Daughters", which indicates it will be sympathetic to the murdered women as women with lives and families and people who loved them. I'm going to watch it.

DanJARMouse · 26/04/2010 08:03

I went to school with one of the girls. I didnt watch last night, but I have recorded it, along with set the Sky+ for tonight and tomorrow too.

I watched the Channel 5 documentary on Wednesday night, and that brought so many feelings back. I need to wait until I am stronger to watch this I think.

My prayers are with the families because although its been nearly 3.5yrs, its being brought back to them all over again.
