Should offer me more than £20 for endangering my sons life by selling and fitting a faulty car seat???

instead they sent this reply....

Thank you for your email.

Halfords do not advertise that our child seat fitters are qualified. They
benefit from cascade training and undertake training sessions. Each fitter
is then given a "grading".

Once again, we really do understand that this situation could have been a
lot worse and we are thankful that it wasn't but we are under no obligation
to offer compensation for something that did not happen.

Please accept my apologies.

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:16

Bessie them or me ????

venusonarockbun · 21/04/2010 15:24

What was the fault with the car seat?

scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 15:28

Did they replace the faulty car seat?

DaisymooSteiner · 21/04/2010 15:32

Whilst not wanting to minimise the seriousness of what happened, surely you have to have actually suffered some sort of loss to be compensated against it? You've presumably had the hassle of needing to get a new car seat, but I would have thought that £20 was reasonable compensation for this. Unless there's something you haven't mentioned, like him being injured or them not replacing the seat?

gagamama · 21/04/2010 15:34

YANBU. Perhaps, if they're not obliged to offer compensation for something that 'did not happen', you might feel obliged to post frequently about HALFORDS and their CAR SEAT FITTING by UNQUALIFIED FITTERS which can be DANGEROUS.

Did you get that, Google search optimisation? HALFORDS CAR SEAT FITTING can be DANGEROUS! And the FITTERS are UNQUALIFIED! DANGEROUS! DANGEROUS! From HALFORDS!

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:35

the upper straps (shoulder straps) were faulty meaning they had loads of slack regardless of how tight i tightened them, he could get out of the seat.

They charged me £30 extra for a new seat.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 15:39

Was the new seat a different brand and should it have cost £30 more anyway? You should have got your original money back though, so you could have the option of purchasing elsewhere.

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:43

yes it was a new one and a different make as the manager told me that they had had a couple of the graco ones returned.

OP posts:
ruddynorah · 21/04/2010 15:44

was it the same car seat brand and type they replaced it with? or a totally different type? that cost £30 more?

if the original seat was faulty then all they are obliged to do is actually fix it, or they can offer you a replacement or refund. sounds like you effectively got a refund then bought a new seat.

but you wanted the other, more expensive, car seat without paying the extra £30 to compensate for the fault with the original?

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:47

I had been told the seat fitter should have known there was a fault on the seat and thats where my problem lies tbh.

OP posts:
TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:48

And actually under the sales of goods act they are at liberty to refund/replace or repair.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 15:48

If they offered £20 as a discount for the extra £30 cost, then that doesn't sound too bad.....perhaps they could have handled the complaint better though

Scurry the £20 has taken from last year until today to be offered.

OP posts:
TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 15:50

Fio no refund was offered, nothing until email today.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 15:52

Oh...ok now I understand....yes, they have handled your complaint badly....that is something they should have offered on the day,I would have thought. They are under no obligation to however, as you didn't have to buy a more epensive one but in the interest of customer relations, it seems a bit mean.

scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 15:53

No...back to being confused now, what did they offer on the day?

MrsC2010 · 21/04/2010 15:55

Presumeably on the day they refunded you the money for the original, and you then bought the more expensive one for £30 more?

Scurry on the day the assistant manager explained there had been a couple of others returned for the ame reason. He then took the seat in the store with dp and brought out the seat he recommended. being the maxi cosi one.

lisianthus · 21/04/2010 16:01

That's appalling! They do lots of advertising about their car seat fitting too - I don't watch that much TV, but have seen several of their ads showing the Halfords person fitting a car seat for a grateful mother, so there must be a stack of these ads running.

And Halfords have told you that their car seat fitters aren't even QUALIFIED?

Holy cow.

TLE, I am sorry you have been through this, but thank you for drawing this to my (and others') attention. If getting a safe (and safely fitted) car seat at Halfords is this much of a lottery, I am staying well away from them.

scurryfunge · 21/04/2010 16:02

That's not on then -if the time scale was reasonable they should have replaced or refunded.

MrsC2010 · 21/04/2010 16:02

How do you qualify as a car seat fitter?

TheLadyEvenstar · 21/04/2010 16:05

ok,
they never refunded me the money at all they just asked dp for the extra money while he was in the store.

I had the seat less than 3 months. I initially thought he had found a way to pull the straps lose, it was not until i went back to the store to find out if there was anything i could buy that the assistant manager looked at it and told me there was nothing to buy for it as it was faulty.
