to think the media is full of Brits stuck abroad but seems to have forgotten about all of those people stuck in the UK trying to get home to other countries.

I have been following the news for days and there has hardly been a mention of people in the UK who are trying to get out of the country. Do they only care about Brits abroad?

I actually think the media is being unreasonable...

I suspect the media in their respective countries are covering that side? The story is only a story because they are Brits, so the British media will cover it, if you see what I mean.

runnybottom · 20/04/2010 22:57

Might be a british thing, here in Ireland there is equally as much news on people stranded here as ours abroad.

2rebecca · 20/04/2010 22:58

I've avoided the media as tales of moany people unable to get back from their holidays/ to their holidays when they want is very boring.
I definitely don't want more of it.
With moany holiday makers and repeated circular arguments about the selection it's a good time to avoid the news and the papers.

VixeyV · 20/04/2010 22:58

What MrsC said. Hopefully the people stuck in britain have somewhere to stay and food to eat.

2rebecca · 20/04/2010 22:59

election not selection, although similar I suppose.

MrsC2010 · 20/04/2010 23:00

Perhaps there are comparitively less? I mean, there are 150,000+ Brits overseas, but perhaps only a relatively few thousand stuck in the UK? I also suspect that ferries etc are easier getting out of the UK than getting in, so travel off hasn't been as bad. (Apart from long haul obviously.)

RodentOfUnusualSize · 20/04/2010 23:12

Um, it is not unreasonable for the British media to focus on Brits struck abroad. If you read any international news sites they are all the same - the Sydney Morning Herald reports on stranded Aussies just as the New Zealand Herald reports on stranded Kiwis.

So YABU.

"I suspect the media in their respective countries are covering that side"

There has been nothing in our paper other than the basics (paraphrasing) 'a volcano erupted causing airport closures' Nothing of stranded people here, or anywhere else. No further mention.

We have an aunt & uncle here (Australia) who are due to fly back soon & aunt needs an important medical procedure done the day after they arrive home (needs to be done every 6 weeks) so we are hoping they will get home OK.

thumbwitch · 21/04/2010 01:32

What MrsC said - here in Australia it's all about Australians who are stuck in the UK/Europe - they have even tracked down Australians in some of the airports to talk to about it.

I don't read the papers so can't answer for what differentname said - but it was certainly on the tv news. And every day there is an update on when Qantas might be able to fly to Europe again.

The other side of things here is that Anzac day is coming up and a fair number of Australians try to get to Turkey to commemorate those who died at Gallipoli - there has been a reasonable amount of coverage as to how people are going to get there if the flights are still blocked.

differentnameforthis · 21/04/2010 02:52

thumb...I don't watch TV too often, so have missed that! Our local paper seems to have an 'if it doesn't happen in Adelaide, it doesn't happen' thing going on sometimes, so maybe that it is..

Or maybe I have blocked it all out!

thumbwitch · 21/04/2010 02:57

at the provinciality of Adelaide newspapers!

gtamom · 21/04/2010 04:11

We mainly see about Canadians stuck somewhere. Didn't see any whining luckily.
Our friend is stuck in Paris, waiting to come home to Canada.
