To want to move to the Isles of Scilly?

In an ideal world, I?d love to but a house on the Isles of Scilly and move there. I know it is not feasible at the moment as DH wouldn?t have a job to go to (even if he did he?s already said he wouldn?t want to move as he thinks it would be too remote and lonely).
Plus, I don?t know if the DCs would get a place at school and it would a big upheaval for everyone but in an ideal world I?d love to do it!

AIBU to consider the idea and look into houses, schools etc etc?

Do some research, talk to people who live there. It can be isolated, and the fact that the Tresco shop only stocks vanilla ice cream would be a no-go for me. As for schools

Are you ready for them to be weekly boarders on the mainland at 11? Because that's what happened to my friend.
How often have you visited?

blowninonabreeze · 20/04/2010 22:55

Me too, every time I watch "an Island parish" I tell DH how much I want to live there.

My head tells me the disadvantages would outweigh its possitives.

jurisfictionoperative · 20/04/2010 23:16

I'd move to the shetlands or the Hebrides! Unfortunately, only dd is keen on the idea. I am a hopeless romantic, and would rather try and fail than never try at all, but I do understand why it's no good when you have kids and responsibilities. Maybe oneday....

jurisfictionoperative · 20/04/2010 23:19

It is good to have dreams though. As long as you can draw a line between dreams and what can happen, go for your life. I found my house, school and everything!

ClickNegg · 20/04/2010 23:19

GOD no have you been there?
it is SO SO dull

Goblinchild · 20/04/2010 23:47

Yes, I have been there and loved it, not boring at all for us. Beaches, wildlife, wonderful gardens, history and interesting literature.
I just wouldn't want to live there all year round for years.

jurisfictionoperative · 20/04/2010 23:47

Perhaps your dull is our idea of heaven! [ smile]

phoebeophelia · 21/04/2010 07:59

How about Alderney? A bit further south than you plan, but no problem with schools, house prices are reasonable and emplyment prospects are good.

phoenixflower · 21/04/2010 12:11

Thanks for the suggestions. DH has said he would consider a location on the coast, as long as we are on the mainland! So I think I?ll have to stick to holidays on Scilly rather than considering a move. There are lots of lovely places by the coast though, I?ll have to do some investigations!

I think Norfolk is reasonably priced. We live in Essex, the coast is pretty pants round here! Pick Scotland, then I can tell dp ' see, phoenixflower did it, why can't we!'

We went there on holiday last year and it is lovely. For a holiday.

I think it would be very hard to live there all year around unless you had been born there. These are very small communities so in the winter you would be socializing with the same few dozen people all the time.

Plus, as someone else said, if you live on one of the off islands, i.e. anywhere other than St Marys, your children would have to be weekly boarders from 11.

When they get to 16 they would have to continue their education on the mainland as there is no 6th form. Realistically, given the lack of jobs on the island, they would then probably have to move away in adult life.

Can defo recommend it for a summer holiday though!

lazymumofteenagesons · 21/04/2010 17:09

Spent one week in august on Tresco for 3 years running and adored it. Children were small and had the freedom that I remember as a child. But to live there - definitely not. Remote, stuck when weather bad. No secondary school and if you don't gel with the small community it would be more lonely than living on your own in London.

brimfull · 21/04/2010 17:12

god I'd be bored scilly

island living -yuck

live in Bermuda for a few yrs and got island fever

FiveGoMadInDorset · 21/04/2010 17:31

YOu really have to think about how you are going to earn a living, it is tough living somewhere that is so dependent on the Ttourist trade.

cherrylips · 21/04/2010 17:32

Ooooh I'd love to live there. Gorgeous place.
