To avoid getting in the shower following foot surgery?

I know I need to go and get in, I've bought polythene bags and rubber bands to put on my feet to keep the dressings dry, but I can't bring myself to go and do it. I had my toenails off yesterday and they hurt like billy o. The idea of getting bags on and climbing into the bath is not an attractive one. OTOH, history has shown that I develop a boil on the fanjo if I don't shower at least daily. Someone give me a kick up the pants. I'll be back to check once I've shuffled off to have a fag.

Have you never heard of the hot flannel undercarriage wash?

gingernutlover · 20/04/2010 08:12

from experience, you will probably feel better once you have done it - and you dont want to be in pain anywhere else just because of not having a quick shower.

at least a foot is quite easy to cover up. Try a full leg plaster! LOL

I know I'll feel better once I've done it, but procrastinating feels better. I've just been amnd made a pot of coffee and had a fag (so good for encouraging wound healing). It's not just one foot, it's both and the way the surgeon dressed them it pulls my toes backward and slightly inward so I'm walking in a strange way. The dressings aren't due off until Thursday so I can't even adjust them. The hospital didn't give me any spare stuff or I would.
Hot fannel on undercarriage will not work. I suppose I'll just have to bite the bullet.

Didn't the hospital give you any advice/contacts for getting a proper cover? - my DC2 had her leg broken at school last year and was in plaster for ages and the hospital gave us the details of some specialist coy which sent a cover (which worked for the bath).

cyb - isn't that an 'Elvis'?? Didn't Priscilla or someone claim that he only did 'underneath the arches'?

Bellisima, no advice. We are in Switzerland and the hospital seemed quite keeen to get me out. I hadn't been any trouble either. Unfortunately we don't have a district nursing service so I need to go to my GP for a dressings change.

It's a bit of a pain, but really not that bad in practice. I did it last October after a nail operation (and the same 10 years ago after a knee job), and I just don't function without a shower every morning.

However, two legs might be a bit tricky. I used to sit on an indestructible metal chair directly under the shower, pull the shower head down as far as it would go, and put the shower curtain over my thighs to catch most of the splash - the placcy bags were just there as back-up. Would it not be best to wait until your dh comes back for some (literal) support?

Best of luck with it anyway...

I feel for you I really do... I had knee surgery last year and I couldn't get the dressings wet for 10 days. Showering was a bloody nightmare and exhausting, but afterwards felt loads better.

The day after I came out of hospital, I just got a really good wash though.

It was certainly a little company like this - I telephoned to get advice on an exact size for DD - you never know, they might post stuff out. On the other hand, I agree with Blauer - two legs might be tricky anyway.

It's done. Feel much better although the bathroom looks like waterworld. We have a shower built over the bath so I couldn't fit a chari into it, and we have screens so I couldn't pull those around me. Oh well, only two more days of it to go!

If you have a bath, sit sideways in the bath and hang your legs out the side ?

mawbroon · 20/04/2010 09:53

bellisimma - I had a limbo over my plaster when I broke my ankle earlier this year. It was great!!

I also wore it over my orthopaedic boot in the birthing pool when I had ds2 last month. And dh wore it last week after a minor op on his ingrowing toenail. It's turning out to be an essential piece of kit in our house.

Would thoroughly recommend it to anybody.

kreecher - i hope your toes are better soon!

Beat me to it Sassy..........

I am going to google me that limbo thingy. I will have to keep my feet dry for a couple of weeks and it may arrive before I can moisten them. Bloody ash filled air affecting the mail.
