My daughter 19 was on bus last week when a young chinese women was set upon verbally none stop for 1/2 an hour. The bus was full and the two young girls 13/14 year olds were sat directly behind the poor women. My daughter glared at the girls across from her to try and make them stop as the chinese girl was getting upset. they carried on, so my daughter told them to stop. they still carried on. No one else on the bus uttered a sound.

My daughter was so upset at what she saw, the 2 young girls blatant attitude and also the other people who turned away.

The girls were not threatening they were just very immature and cruel.

What else could she have done. What responsibilites does the driver have?

Any comments.

Yours girl is great and brave

Yes, I would have intervened - the majority of people don't.

She could tell the driver next time I suppose. Or hold up her mobile to take photos as it's a race crime.

Maybe scratch that last one, I guess they could then have turned on her.

How sad and good on your daughter for speaking up. Its scary to do things like that nowadays. I dont know if I would be brave enough to speak up first but I certainly would have backed your daughter up!!! I know there are some awful consequences to getting invloved in these things but if we let blatant bullying continue unchallenged then whats this world coming to!

bruffin · 19/04/2010 11:11

why should it make any different if it was a race crime or not, surely any sort of bullying should be sorted out.

I am sure you are really proud of your daughter - she is very brave. Whilst I would definitely say something now (at the ripe old age of 37) I am not so sure I would have had such courage at 19. It is shocking that such things are allowed to go on without anyone stepping in to help.

Thankyou for your comments. Its certainly a sad world we live in.

She just can't get over the fact that they carried on after been told to stop when surrounded by adults. She is dismayed really.

Yes I'm very proud of her but I have told her in future if anything like it happens again to speak to the driver and get help.

Your daughter did the right thing. Its a sad reflection of society that other people turned a blind eye to these bigots

Good for your daughter - what a shame no one backed her up. The best way to stop bullies is solidarity and only a couple of people needed to shout "yeah" and pay attention and they would have backed down.
