to think that if a waitress spills a jug of water in your lap...

So she spilt a jug (yes, a full jug) of water in my lap, laughed (as did her colleague in the background), then said sorry. Hurried me off to the toilets to dry myself under the hand dryer (I was so soaked, I had to strip off to dry everything). When I came back to the table she said sorry again and then said "these things happen don't they". Ummm, surely it's my job to make her feel better and say "these things happen" - if I feel she actually is sorry about what happened, rather than finding it quite amusing?

YANBU, I'd be miffed too

gingernutlover · 19/04/2010 09:29

I think she came across as very rude

but some people cover up embarassement by getting the giggles. The comment did make it sound like she was trying to convince you "these things happen" LOL.

hope you've dried out now

gingernutlover · 19/04/2010 09:30

did they offer you a discount as an apology?

bluecardi · 19/04/2010 09:30

Did you get something off your bill?

Knownowt · 19/04/2010 09:32

YANBU- she should have apologised properly. Sometimes people react to v embarrassing situations by giggling- perhaps she was laughing with nerves rather than amuisement.

kitsmummy · 19/04/2010 09:36

DH thinks the laughter was embarassment, and we did get 50% off at the end, which I was v happy with, but I just found her "these things happen" really irritating!

I think she shouldn't have said that - but I think the discount at the end kind of made up for it - they had appreciated that it was hardly an optimal dining experience!

I took four kids to (a well known m class pizza chain) as an end of holiday treat on Friday, Service started slowly then ground to a halt and we were ignored for over an hour and had to leave without puds (inc those paid for on children's menu for littlies) to avoid parking ticket. When I mentioned this to the waitress as we paid (having had to go find her) she just said 'well you don't know the day I'm having!'. great. a fantastic way to spend £70 treating children. sorry for hijack and rant.

I once spilled a glass of wine over a food critic who came to check out the restaurant, believe me, it is mortifying, and what can you say!! I apologised for the next half hour, went out for a little cry and she got a free meal! It does happen, and people cope differently, being a waitress can be a foul job. It could have been worse, it could have been mulligatawny soup! Have pity.

cumbria81 · 19/04/2010 10:03

I once dropped peas down this woman's cleavage when I was a waitress. It was mortifying. I wondered if I should help her pick them out but decided that wouldn't help the situation.

Slovenlymummy · 19/04/2010 12:43

My brother had hot soup spilled all over his back, shoulder and lap once. To make matters worse, the very young waitress started frantically dabbing at his crotch trying to wipe it up, adding to embarassment all round! Fortunately it was not hot enough to scald. Think we got discount, can't remember, but the girl was mortified.

TheProvincialLady · 19/04/2010 12:45

I threw fruit salad down a woman's back on Christmas day But I did apologise and she was very kind. Sounds like your waitress was lacking in social skills but I wouldn't dwell on it too much.

Mouseface · 19/04/2010 12:48

It's embarassing all round when "these thing happen". I'm sure she was mortified and the one liner with the added giggle/laugh was just nerves. At least she gave you a discount. Many places wouldn't.

Mouseface · 19/04/2010 12:48

embarrassing!

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 19/04/2010 12:51

50% off sounds like nothing to complain about to me.

oldraver · 19/04/2010 16:11

Well she said sorry I suppose, more than I got when a young lad spilt HOT gravy over my arm and top

mummytotwins · 19/04/2010 16:19

I worked in a pub once where a waitress tripped and dropped a steak sizzler (you know those things you cook the steak on then put onto a piece of wood to take to the customer) straight onto a mans lap!!!!
