Even though I must have seen it at least three times?

And that it's a sunny day and I should be out being busy?

He calls him 'Dad' at the end

you would be unreasonable not to be sobbing.

dizzydixies · 17/04/2010 14:47

oh god, absolutely not its horrendous even without preggy hormones - the book is worse

Karmann · 17/04/2010 14:47

I was OK til I read your last line! Pass me the tissues - it gets me every time!

Now go outside and get busy - bury your belt in your veggie patch!

CharCharGabor · 17/04/2010 14:47

Oh I looove Goodnight Mister Tom. I always cry buckets at the end and frequently during.

RedRedWine1980 · 17/04/2010 14:47

It always makes me cry

CheerfulYank · 17/04/2010 15:02

OMG! I didn't even know it was a movie! Will try to netflix it immediately! My childhood copy of the book has been repaired scores of times; I've literally read it to pieces. I cry throughout the whole thing-with Zach, when Willie has been beaten and is curled up saying "I want you, Mr. Tom", when Mr Tom goes looking for him, when he says, "He called me Dad," and cries...Oh, I LOVE it.

AnnDaloozier · 17/04/2010 15:03

OH YES
THE BOOK IS FAR BETTER THough
sorry
we read book and were Let Down by film

BitOfFun · 17/04/2010 15:06

The book is superb, I agree, but the film is a wonderful adaptation- John Thaw is perfect.

I've got it on dvd, CheerfulYank- I'd be happy to lend you it if you CAT me your address?

Oh, I sob through the book every time, so I'm sure i'll be a pile of tears. Thanks for the warning!

Come to think of it, think was Mr. Tom that started my anglophilia...so that book, read by me at the age of ten, led to me being here on this site right now. Interesting, that!

BitOfFun · 17/04/2010 15:32

Reality- come and check out my suggestion here...whaddya reckon?

The whole evacuees thing makes me cry whenever I think of it. Can you imagine having to send your kids off on a train to some stranger. The image of the big ones having to carry the little ones. That really does upset me

LetThereBeRock · 17/04/2010 15:41

YANBU.How could you not?

SethStarkaddersMum · 17/04/2010 15:43

CheerfulYank have you read Back Home by the same author?

SpiritualKnot · 17/04/2010 15:49

Too tragic and awful to watch more than once for me! Found the same with "The colour purple" Tend to cry all night after these sort of films.

Prefer thrillers and romantic comedies these days!

tethersend · 17/04/2010 17:24

I can't watch it without sobbing.

I taught a kid with severe behavioural problems once who told me it was his favourite film. It later transpired that he was being neglected and abused at home, much like the protagonist. It reminds me of him every time

AnnDaloozier · 17/04/2010 17:27

is the dead baby in the film?
we have only done half

bluebump · 17/04/2010 17:28

Oh I always cry watching that but I always tune in if I see it's on the telly. I loved the book as a child (probably would still love it now!)

CheekyVimtoGal · 17/04/2010 17:30

i think the book is much better, i read it at school. Good story though.

Nemain · 17/04/2010 17:33

Books are always better than films IMO.

I love this film adaptation though and also sob every time I watch it. Being totally in love with John Thaw didn't do any harm either (I know, I am a freak).

YABU if you don't cry!

Ladyanonymous · 17/04/2010 17:38

YANBU - They showed my daughter this at the end of term...shes in year 6 and didn't get to see the end ... I have a copy I can show her but wonder if its a bit traumatic for a 10 yr old...she nearly had a breakdown after Marley & Me and then a week later our cat dropped dead

bruffin · 17/04/2010 17:39

yes the dead baby is in the film, it's heart breaking!

Nemain · 18/04/2010 10:46

Talking of.... it is on right now on ITV3!
