Flame away as you like but as i see it

the last time this volcano blew it was going to 2 years.

the amount of ash is huge and it is not going to fall out of the sky in 5 mins - even if we have a huge downpour.

this quanitiy of ash and sulfur coming down is going to acidify the rivers and lake and cause issues for reservoit drinking water and the water way ecosystems, and damage buildings.

the wind streams are fical and we are likely to be under ash pathway for a while.

Asmatics who are sulfur sensitive are going to be suffering for a while even after the levels of sulfur in the air reduces.

So ABIU to think that the problems from the ash are going to be long lasting and lingering rather then just blow over after the weekend?

You anbu to prove evidence if you disagree and think i abu

If it is going to be a long term eruptor then eruptions tend to turn to lava flows and low level eruptions. Explosive eruptions that send ash high etc tend to last a short period of time, couple of weeks max (hopefully). The amount of debris is minimal and has been spread widely so even if it does fall will be very diluted.

Restrainedrabbit · 16/04/2010 12:13

We have prop job planes going over us at the moment so assume they are ok? We are in sunny glaw-ster-shire-err

Undertone · 16/04/2010 12:17

If it actually WERE the end of the world - what would everyone do?

Personally, I would get about a kilo of chocolate and eat it.

fartblossom · 16/04/2010 12:21

I too had a thought it was a consipiracy theory at one point.

I had a joke to my husband yesterday saying its not an ash cloud, but america (or somewhere similar) is now all zombies and there keeping us from going over . If it was the end of the world, I dont think they would tell us anyway cos they wouldnt want mass panic.

However, I am more inclined to think that it is a big cloud of Ash, but I did see someone on TV yesterday that said it was very unlikely there would be any health side effects for us. So even though Im still a tiny bit concerned that there will be bad effects from it, Im not too bothered on the main.

Slugbrains · 16/04/2010 12:21

Undertone - no one was suggesting it was the end of the world, just that it wasn't as simple as it was being made out. I would probably hang on before you purchase that kilo. But I like your thinking. I would eat all the dairy things that i love but am not allowed to eat.

But would they tell us if the world was ending?

PortBlacksandDweller · 16/04/2010 12:26

Best eat that choc Undertone - just to be on the safe side

Slugbrains · 16/04/2010 12:33

Probably to cover up the lastest political screw up

Enjoy.

I heard Evan Davies on R4 saying we are supposed to be trying to get cash not ash out of Iceland!

The problem at the moment - if you look out of your window - is that we have high pressure over us, so the ash cloud is moving too slowly.

What we need is some wet and windy Atlantic storms to stir it all up and send it somewhere else.

however, the sky is lovely and quiet!! And as a bonus dh doesn't have to fly off today, so the dc's will get some daddy time!

wannaBe · 16/04/2010 13:42

if there was any chance that this could be more serious the media would make sure that enough hysteria was spread to cause a country-wide panic.

Just look at the reaction to swine flu and the fallout that caused.

There's no way the media would let an opportunity to cause mass hysteria pass them by.

Restrainedrabbit aircraft flying in uncontrolled airspace are not grounded.

fruitshootsandheaves · 16/04/2010 13:51

there should be a comma in that sentence obviously, as there is no such aircraft as a restrainedrabbit aircraft

foxinsocks · 16/04/2010 13:56

lol at restrained rabbit aircraft. That just made me lolol.

I love the conspiracy theories. Perhaps it's all timed with the new series of V! A whole new species is populating earth as we speak all under the cover of the giant ash cloud! They all have good intentions to start with...

maduggar · 16/04/2010 14:04

Getting slight sulphur wafts in the air here, makes it seem more real!

MillyR · 16/04/2010 14:05

There are positive and negative environmental consequences when a volcano erupts.

Ah well, I bet Cheryl Cole feels a little less lonely now that she is not the only one with an Ash cloud over her

Slugbrains · 16/04/2010 14:36

Milly, is it good for the soil??
I can't smell anything as our garden smells of fish since dh treated the lawn

MillyR · 16/04/2010 14:53

It can be good for nutrient levels in the soil long term, but it depends on the amount of ash. If there is too much ash it can make arable land infertile in the short term.
