Eye lash perming for an 8 year old girl?!

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 15:38

My friend has recently taken her 8 year old daughter to a salon to perm her eye lashes and wax her eye brows. Am I being unreasonable to think that it's a bit much for an 8 year old, and a bit irresponsible. Or am I just being a killjoy? What do you think?

YANBU too much too young, heaven forbid the child be a child, she probably bought her one of those Primark bikini's too!

lovechoc · 15/04/2010 15:40

I don't have a daughter but I just don't like to hear stories like this. IMHO it's inappropriate and there's loads of time later on to do 'grown-up' stuff. I'd hate to be an 8 yo these days with such pressure to grow up fast. Can't they just be little girls???

YANBU.

cluckyduck · 15/04/2010 15:43

That's horrendous. YANBU, who looks at their 8yr old DD and thinks 'well I love her.... But I'd MUCH prefer her once her brows are sorted out'.....!

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 15:43

I didn't say anything to her because I wasn't sure if it was just me over reacting.

Its sick- piss poor parenting and they are always the ones who tend to be shocked when they discover their teens are off smoking/drinking/having sex/doing things well beyond their years and refuse to acknowledge they had any part in their kids growing up too fast.

Dreadful. Wish she'd taken me instead.

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 15:45

It may well be the little girl who had asked for her brows and lashes to be done, I am not sure. I personally would have said no if my DD asked me, but that's just me.

Horrible, imo, to make a child so adult like, I am VERY surprised the salon would do this, surely there is an age limit?
`
My sister allows my 13yr old niece to have nail extensions and highlighted hair, makes me so mad, she has been allowed this since she was 11. It's just wrong on so many levels.

Children should be treated like children imo, not mini adults or barbie dolls!

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 15:48

I was wondering if I was just a prude and all other little girls have things like that done too.

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 15:50

LisaD1- is your niece's school alright with the hair and extensions?

You know when I saw the thread title I honestly thought it was a joke, because of the bikini thread. Of course, YANBU OP, that's just insane.

LisaD1 · 15/04/2010 16:02

Chocobiccie-as far as I know there has been no issue with the school, I don't speak to my sister and only communicate directly with my niece (she also has a mobile as does her 8yr old sister!)

scaryteacher · 15/04/2010 16:05

I'm 44 and don't know what eyelash perming is. Please explain?

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 16:08

Nope. Not a joke at all.

I didn't say anything becasue my friend is quite sensitive to any negative comments.

OP posts:
chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 16:09

scaryteacher- it's using perming solution (must be a special kind for eye lashes) to curl your eye lashes. Lasts for a month approximately I think?

OP posts:
ChocolatePants · 15/04/2010 16:10

Inappropriate. At best

ImSoNotTelling · 15/04/2010 16:11

I'm surprised they did it.

Firstly because she's too young. Just obviously

And secondly because you are basically putting strong perming chemicals right next to your eyeball, and you have to hold dead still. I wouldn't have thought they would do it on an 8yo for safety/getting sued type reasons.

scaryteacher they get sort of little cylinders and put your eyelashes around them (like miniature rollers I guess) then put perming chemical on to hold the curl. Exactly the same as your hair. AFAIK. have had it done and that's what they told me anyway.

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 16:11

LisaD1 - I asked because I wonder if schools get involved in these things nowadays. I remember in my school days that girls were being sent home for having too much makeup on or too short skirts.

weird !

Tiredmumno1 · 15/04/2010 16:12

Wtf??? maybe you should ask your mate if she has a brain in her head. bloody ridiculous

ImSoNotTelling · 15/04/2010 16:13

I am honestly extremely surprised that the salon agreed to do this, to say the least.

Whereabouts in teh country is it? (Not that I'm sure it makes a difference, just interested)

chocobiccie · 15/04/2010 16:15

london

pigletmania · 15/04/2010 16:16

YANBU absolutely gross, why!!!!! No wonder kids have so many hangups.

ImSoNotTelling · 15/04/2010 16:19

London eh.

I'm staggered, honestly.
