...to bring a boy home from the hospital dressed in pink - if all my scan said it was a girl??

newmomma · 15/04/2010 10:10

I'm sure baby is actually a boy - and my MIL thinks I'm being ridiculous not going out and buying/packing some blue stuff to bring baby home in.

I've done my hospital bag and just think that if it does turn out to be a boy - its not the end of the world to bring him home in pink - it won't be forever!

Your baby, your choice but if you see anyone they will ask what you have named your daughter. Depends if you care what people think.

PeedOffWithNits · 15/04/2010 11:17

most scans cannot tell you a definite sex anyway!

boy bits can be hidden, or the cord can be mistaken for them

rhondajean · 15/04/2010 11:18

From what I remember from my scans if they can clearly see its a boy they are quite confident to say its a boy, but if its a girl then they always add a caveat - just in CASE its hiding something with the angle they have in the scan?

Anyway - pinks a lucky colour in Thailand, and also, have you ever heard "A Boy Called Sue"??

Id just be grateful if this is the biggest thing you have had to worry about so far!!

BettyButterknife · 15/04/2010 11:24

Pah, I wouldn't worry about a boy in pink. Used to be traditional, as a toned down version of red which was considered the most 'macho' colour. And blue for girls, as it was 'delicate'.

I actively seek out unisex stuff for my DS, and he has a couple of pink and blue stripy tops, had a pinky-beige cardigan when he was a baby. Even when dressed all in very obvious boy clothes aged about 2 he still had people asking me 'what's her name?'. Must be the lovely long eyelashes he inherited from me

newmomma · 15/04/2010 15:48

rhondajean I wish this was the biggest thing I have had to worry about so far - it, unfortunately, by no means is.

Its just the latest.

My DS came home in a black and white zebra print sleepsuit. The MWs all came to have a look at him

MillyMollyMoo · 15/04/2010 16:18

I've been told my baby is a boy and have bought blue bits and bobs but plenty of white and until I see the winkie the tags are staying on the good stuff.

smokinaces · 15/04/2010 16:51

I was convinced DS2 was a girl - even though 2 scans told me a boy. He of course came out a boy - but his babygrows were all unisex (black and white zebra print ones from his auntie for his older brother) and his coming home outfit was nice red dungarees, just in case. I also decorated his room beige and red as I didnt get the boy vibes.

Turns out he was most definately a boy - but a very blonde haired one (DS1 was dark) who incidently suits very bold colours unlike the neutrals and blues his brother favours

but no, would have no qualms putting a boy in pink or a girl in blue, so YANBU

The only trouble with that waswondering is that you're supposed to wash them before the baby wears them aren't you.
Am putting far too much thought into this as you can probably tell.

Newborns wear WHITE BABYGROS

5DollarShake · 15/04/2010 17:01

You will need more than one baby outfit in your hospital bag for the baby, unless you plan to give birth and then flee the hospital seconds later, which is highly unlikely. Most people have to stay in overnight.

On that basis, I would throw in a couple of neutral suits as well as the pink, and then you're covered.

Clarissimo · 15/04/2010 17:04

It matters not a jot what colour they are wearing

Although I always had white or yellow even when I knew gender. Really, pure coton white sleepsuits are about £1 each in Asda, shove one through the wash and in your bag and sorted. If it's cold and coats etc are needed (it is so up and down atm) well they are tooe xpensive to give a fig about. Good luck.

mathanxiety · 15/04/2010 17:06

I agree about the washing beforehand.

All mine wore the same little grass-green onesies home. They looked like elves.

Wanderingsheep · 15/04/2010 17:11

Well Yanbu but when I was pg with DD we knew she was a girl.

I refused to buy anything pink decor-wise just in case, so we had neutral. We had lots of pink clothes though, but had some neutral baby grows.

When I went to hospital I took a couple of neutral babygrows, just incase she was actually a he and a couple of pink.

Wanderingsheep · 15/04/2010 17:14

Oops, I never washed anything before DD was born I didn't think it mattered as they were new!

MillyMollyMoo · 15/04/2010 17:14

I don't get this whole 10 outfits for the baby thing.
DD2 was born at 4pm, washed, dressed and left the hospital in the same outfit at 10am the next day, what can they possibly do in 12 hours that requires a few changes ?
I'm packing a pack of three (sleepsuits, not condoms) and that's it's lot.

Dollytwat · 15/04/2010 17:20

I was TOLD at my scan I was having a girl, she'd put money on it she said, although no guarantees.

But I bought white just in case, and good job cos I was a bit shocked when the midwife said it was a boy!

Took me a while to get used to the idea of having a boy though.

5DollarShake · 15/04/2010 17:25

MMM - who's saying anything about needing 10 outfits? I packed three for DS1 and will pack 3 again for DC2.

DS was born at 3AM and we didn't get released until 5PM the following day as it was so busy. You just never know how long you're going to be in.

There is a chance that a new parent might not cope well with meconium nappies, or the baby might posset milk - anything could happen if you're in overnight, so just packing one outfit is potential cause for hassle in my book...

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 15/04/2010 17:27

MMM - sick, nappy leaks, all sorts!

5DollarShake · 15/04/2010 17:29

Also, little boys are a different kettle of fish - DS1 sprayed his vest and sleepsuit during one of his very first nappy changes - I wasn't dexterous enough to cover him in time, mid change.

fernie3 · 15/04/2010 17:37

my baby is a girl and I have white baby gros for the hospital bag just in case. Do have a pink hat though

BertieBotts · 15/04/2010 17:47

White, blue and pink are all boring. I went and picked out a very cute, bright sleepsuit for the journey home. Boots have some lovely ones in at the moment. I like the Mothercare giraffe design ones too.

TrillianAstra · 15/04/2010 17:50

My God, pink babygrows? You can't possibly! You'll turn him gay!
