to be really surprised at how much children's clothes sizes have changed?

I was just given a load of stuff for DS2, all of it from the early 90s (lots of Sweater Shop, lol.)

It is all labelled 18-24 months, but my 16 month old EnormaBaby is struggling to get in them! I am really . There are oshkosh dungarees in there that barely fit, labelled 1.5 - 2y. The other day he was wearing similar ones labelled 12m, from more recently, and they are actually bigger.

WTF is going on? I understand shops pandering to women by making the sizes bigger (I am so not a 16, ten years ago I was a 14 and I am way more than one size bigger!) but why do our children's clothes need to have this done?

or perhaps they have just been shrunk in the wash?

CuppaTeaJanice · 13/04/2010 19:14

It's annoying isn't it. My DS spends much of the day with his trousers round his ankles. It seems they make the waistbands for much chunkier kids these days.

Nightshoe · 13/04/2010 19:16

I think that sizes vary from shop to shop anyway regardless. It even happens in the same shop - a Next age 4-5 (younger girls) is bigger than a Next Age 4 (older girls). I'm not sure shops really are into vanity sizing for babies - DD has clothes that are age 2-3 she fits in and also some age 6 t-shirts.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/04/2010 19:24

I was just about to start a thread along the lines of "wtf are we feeding our kids as they've got so huge"

DD aged 11 has size 6 feet and is 5ft 2", her best friend (also 11)had size 7.5 feet and is 5ft 6".

They are all GIANTS and all wearing size 8/10 adult womens clothes.

bruffin · 13/04/2010 19:34

My 14 yhear old is nearly 6ft and size 11 feet. He has always been in clothes a year to 2 years bigger than his size.
DD is 12 and 5'4 and size 6/8 clothes and size 5 feet. But neither of them has ever had an ounce of fat on them, they are just much taller despite me being a diddy 5'2.

Firawla · 13/04/2010 19:44

I think it varies a lot between the brands, but maybe in early 90s our sizes were more similar with the french ones cos their stuff seems way smaller than uk sizes, even american stuff is supposed to be smaller than ours.
I think they measure kids now and again and take the averages and adjust the sizes, cos I got some email inviting me to take my kids for a big measuring event to help asda and monsoon and various people to adjust their kids clothes sizes, I didn't go though cos it wasn't near by but that suggests they do adjust them based on average childrens sizes from those who they measure?
I wouldn't be suprised if children have grown a bit more on average from 10 yrs ago it seems to be the trend kids bigger than before?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 13/04/2010 19:49

Girls these days certainly seem taller. I am 5 ft 3 , and whilst I have never considered myself a giant, now see I am a real shortarse, with teenagers all towering over me....

Well DS is 18 months, but has just gone into 12-18 month clothes. His feet however are about a size 6.5 which meant no sleepsuits from about 10 months!

bruffin · 13/04/2010 23:45

When I started secondary school back int early 70's the girls were a lot taller than the boys we towered over them, but by 3rd/4th year the boys had caught up and shot passed us.

My dd1 is enormous, 120cm tall with a tiny waist and will soon be in 7-8y clothes despite having just turned 6! She has size 12.5 feet too......

Dd2 is 4.5 and is is 4-5y tops and 3-4 trousers, and even they're too big for her little waist.

Ds1 is 6.5m and in 9-12m clothes.......
Thank god for footless pj's and adjustable waists!

TinyPawz · 13/04/2010 23:58

My DD (3) wears mostly 4-5 cloths but this weekend I had to buy t-shirts & shorts for the lovely weather and 4-5 were too small. Now in 6-7 t-shirts!

I think that is was very dependant on the shop though. She is tall just not that tall

bumpybecky · 14/04/2010 00:04

I was chatting to MIL about how difficult it is to get trousers to fit dd1 as she is so slim. We compared waist measurements and I now know that 21 inch waist is the same as

age 3-4 for M&S girls clothes
dd1's waist - she's 11!
MIL's waist when she got married 47 years ago

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 14/04/2010 00:13

It happened a few years ago, they resized everything. I know this because for three years ds could fit into aged 5 clothes from Next as they just kept making them bigger. It depends on the shop I think.

Tigurr · 14/04/2010 04:23

My DD1 is 6.5yrs old, 127cm tall with a 23inch waist (only know this as I had to measure her before ordering some stuff from M&S). She isn't overweight at all, just tall/big for her age. Her clothes range from age 7-8 up to age 9-10 depending on the shop and the type of clothes.

DD2 is 10 months and is currently in 9-12m outfits and 12-18m babgros & sleepsuits. However I need to get the next size out as they are all getting too small for her - so she will be going into 12-18m outfits & 18-24m sleepsuits.

DD1 has always been a size or 2 bigger than her age, and it looks like DD2 is following in her (rather sizable) footsteps.

The main problem I have these days is finding appropriate clothing for DD1 - a lot of age 9-10 stuff is aimed, obviously, at older girls (ie 9-10yr olds) but DD1 is only 6.5 so there's some things I don't want her wearing just yet (if ever!)

Bathsheba · 14/04/2010 07:43

My girls are very slim (completely unheard of in out family) and, while Ic an get tops from any shops, there is a limited number of placesI can get bottoms from....because so many seem to cater for the chunkier side of the spectrum.

I was very chunky as a child and there was nowhere at all I could get clothes - I'm glad for the "me"s of this generation that they at least have choices that I didn;t have...

hazeyjane · 14/04/2010 07:49

I do think it mostly varies from shop to shop and style to style, rather than it being a trend.

Dds are 3 and 4 and they still wear some tshirts that have got 6-9 months in the label.

I bought 2 Boden dresses from e-bay the other day both 3-4 years and one is dragging on the floor length and about 5 inches too wide, and the other is a perfect fit.

bruffin · 14/04/2010 10:48

I do realise that Mintbug i am only 5'2 and my 12 year old DD is taller than me

But once the boys start to grow a bit later they are huge as well.
