To think a child's meal shouldn't cost more than an adult's one?

Went to the restaurant of our local pub which has a good reputation for its food.During the week they do a fixed price 3 course meal as well as the a la carte. We took our 2 youngest 5 and 7 there last night. They chose starters and puddings off the fixed price menu but were still debating what to have for a main course when the waitress came up, the food was all quite adult. The waitress suggested they might prefer a children's main course - and both decided on chicken nuggets ,chips and sweet corn.
When the bill came the children had been charged for individual starter ,main couse and desert a la carte prices which came out at £5 each more than the table d'hote price!
I refused to pay any more than the fixed price for both of them and left my address to take me to court if they wanted to take it further. Was I being unreasonable ?

YANBU to think that a child's meal shouldn't cost more than an adult's meal, but YABU to have refused to pay. I presume the prices were on the menu, so you knew that what your DCs ordered would cost before the bill came? The pub simply charged you for what you ordered.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 09/04/2010 22:59

You were being unreasonable, if this is what you agreed to then this is what you have to pay for. A childrens meal is just what it says on the childrens menu, not a starter and a pudding off another menu as there's normally a very different one on the childrens menu IYSWIM.

Sorry.

princessparty · 09/04/2010 23:00

No the children's main courses were not on the menu.It is not really a place that gets too many children. The landlords wasn't working tonight though so I might email him

If the waitress suggested the children's courses when you were still considering thew ordinary fixed price menu, without mentioning that it would cost more, then I think YANBU.

MillyMollyMoo · 09/04/2010 23:03

Gosh are you sure of your legal position, after all the menu listed the prices, you weren't unhappy with the quality of food and you left without paying..... sounds like theft.

princessparty · 09/04/2010 23:07

Oh I did pay, but only the fixed price for all of us
.There was no children's menu or prices for children's dishes.

Fair enough, you should have been told that the childrens meals cost a different amount.

They normally make a child's meal the same as the adults of the fixed price menu just smaller here and they charge 50% of the adult price.

MillyMollyMoo · 09/04/2010 23:09

Oh well in that case I would have assumed they were free ... how can they not have prices on menu's, most odd.

ChippingIn · 10/04/2010 01:48

At first I thought you were BU, but then read it again and I think I have it sorted...

You paid the fixed price menu for all of you (same price for adults as children), the children could have chosen an adult meal off of the fixed price menu, but the waitress suggested nuggets and chips - yes? If this is the case, then no YANBU to expect to pay more than the fixed price menu for the children.

I can see why some are saying YABU, as it comes across a bit confusing - like they chose all 3 options off of the main menu...

SolidGoldBrass · 10/04/2010 01:56

It sounds like the waitress misled you (maybe not on purpose) by suggesting the children have the chicken nuggets without saying that this would mean an extra charge, so I think legally you would have a good chance of winning any case brought against you.

Tiredmumno1 · 10/04/2010 03:39

Oh gawd, we were supposed to go out eat at the harvester tomorrow, i hope we don't have any problems. please feel free to give opinion on the restaurant, i havent been to one for years

SalFresco · 10/04/2010 07:38

YANBU

The waitress suggested an alternative main course, in the context of you all ordering set menus. I would have assumed this was an interchangeable option and that we would be charged the set price.

gingernutlover · 10/04/2010 07:50

YANBU as she didnt point out the different cost which would be incurred by the alternative she suggested.

I would email the owner today and explain the situation, and complain that you feel you were mislead into spending a lot more money than you had inetnded to - which is why you refused to pay the extra.

I very much doubt the chicken nuggets cost the pub more than your main courses but your main point should be that you were not made aware of the cost before ordering.

Jaggers · 11/04/2010 21:10

YANBU If you had requested the change then i think you should of paid fully but seeing as it was suggested as an alternative then it should of been the price of the set menu.

agedknees · 11/04/2010 21:26

yanbu. Surely an adult main would be more than nuggets and chips.

(Don't know if I would have been brave enough to do what you did though).

venusonarockbun · 11/04/2010 21:35

YANBU - and well done for refusing to pay.

compo · 11/04/2010 21:41

Am I the only one impressed by kids that age eating three courses?! Mine would have been happy just with the nuggets, chips and beans
