To be really proud of my DD?

DD1 one is 2.6 and last weekend we got her first proper bike, she already had a balance bike, and now after only four outings she can ride without stablisers or any help from me.

I know this is boasting but she has just done soooo well .

To be fair she loves bikes and has been really driven to learn ride, she learnt to pedal before she was 20 months just through sheer determination. She has been trying to get on my and DH's bikes for ages, but they're a bit big but I still think she's done well.

Oh wow, well done her. Took my girls years longer than that.

TheFirstLady · 09/04/2010 16:20

That's fantastic. Mine were all at least six before they managed it.

morejuiceplease · 09/04/2010 16:52

Wow that's really good. Well done little row

ellesapelle · 09/04/2010 17:00

That's brilliant. It took me until I was nearly 10 - but then I have no sense of balance.

canella · 09/04/2010 17:20

i'm very proud of your dd!! my ds2 has also learned today - i thought he was doing well cause he's 3.8! but your dd properly wins that competition!

the trouble we had was finding a bike that was small enough for him but a friend lent us one today and he was right on it! makes my heart burst with pride! dd is not so amused - she learned when she was 6 so is gutted he's half her age when he learned!

Firawla · 09/04/2010 17:23

yanbu i would be really proud it seems very young to ride a bike

Alambil · 09/04/2010 18:14

I'd be terrified! can't imagine a 3 year old having much safety awareness lol

ds is nearly 8 and still can't ride a bike... bloody sn

Hulababy · 09/04/2010 18:27

Well done to her. That is fab!

foureleven · 09/04/2010 18:33

Well dont to her thats amazing!

My daughter is 4 and can just about ride WITH stabilisers!

rowrowrowyourboat · 09/04/2010 22:16

Thank-you all, she has done so well, and I'm so pleased for her that others think so too.

foureleven - throw away the stabilisers!! they are the worst invention for learning to ride a bike!

strip your dd's bike of the stabilisers and the pedals and let her go round with her bike like a balance bike - i bet within 2 weeks she'll be ready to have the pedals back on!

think the OP's dd had a balance bike as did all of my dc and they are the quickest way to learn to ride! but stripping a bike of pedals is the same thing! there's no way ds2 would have learned at this young age without being able to balance first!

foureleven · 11/04/2010 22:29

Wow i'll try it, thanks

Vallhala · 11/04/2010 22:33

Brilliant stuff!

I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was 38!

5Foot5 · 12/04/2010 13:07

That is very good. DD was nearly 8.

TidyBush · 12/04/2010 13:16

That's fantastic - well done little boat .

Interesting what canella said about stabilisers. DD1 eventually learned to ride a bike at about 9 or 10 but DD2, although fine with stabilisers, completely refused to carry on trying once we took them off. She's 13 now and still refuses to try so I wish we'd never put the stabilisers on when she was little.

canella · 12/04/2010 21:36

tidybush (love the name - wish mine was!!) - i think balancing bikes are a fairly new revolution in the UK for teaching kids to learn to ride bikes! we're in germany where its how nearly every kids learns to ride a bike! but balancing bikes make the most sense when you think about it! having stabilisers only teaches kids to pedal and to control the speed - nothing about the balancing they really need to be able to cycle!

Why not try taking the pedals off you're dd2's bike in the park on a quiet sunday morning and letting her get the feel for balancing a bike - down a gentle slope is the best way! i'm sure after a few goes of balancing the bike she's be happier to try it again with the pedals on!

think i should start a MN campaign to ban stabilisers!

TidyBush · 13/04/2010 22:35

Alas - I think it's too late for DD2 - riding a bike is not at all cool and she would spend more time worried about her hair looking a mess than whether or not she stays upright .

Ah well I can only hope that she wants to impress some fit boy one day with her cycling skills and agrees to a crash course

pigletmania · 13/04/2010 22:46

Thats fantastic well done to your dd, my dd 3 loves bikes but has not got the patience to learn to peddle, mabey when she is older and is more settled.
