to go along with dd's suggestion that the ice-cream van jingle is the 'bedtime bell'?

I didn't tell her, promise.

IT jingled at 7.30pm on Sunday. she said 'Ooh, what's that?'.
I said, oh I don't know, darling what do YOU think? (ok, a small lie).
She said 'maybe, it's Alan our next door neighbour singing a song'.
I said 'maybe '.
She says 'maybe it's the bedtime bell'.
Me 'oh maybe... you'd better go to sleep then '

And for the last four nights, she has said 'oh it's the bedtime bell' and gone straight to sleep .

So, AIBU to not put her right? (Am envisaging it will last approx one week before I go 'oooohhh, it's the ICE CREAM VAN' )

DH always used to tell ours that they palyed the music when they had sold out of ice cream !

rhondajean · 08/04/2010 20:00

Haha no NBU by any means. My DD1 was told that it was the music van which came round to play a nice tune when the sun was out to keep everyone happy and that lasted for months until I grudgingly let her stay over at grandparents and they took her out to buy her crap sweeties.

Was nice while it lasted tho.....

Jamieandhismagictorch · 08/04/2010 20:03

Yes, we used to call it the "music van", and then when they discovered it was actually an ice cream van, we used to tell the DSs the music meant the ice creams had run out. Oh, innocent days !!!!

Snobear4000 · 08/04/2010 20:04

We call the ice cream van the "song truck". DS almost 4yo still hasn't realised our clever ruse.

coldtits · 08/04/2010 20:06

YABu

Because one day, the ice cream van won't come, and she will refuse to go to sleep because she hasn't heard the bedtime bell.

Adair · 08/04/2010 20:28

at coldtits - don't worry, we're not relying on it, she is already in bed and almost asleep when the 'bedtime bell' comes (is not exactly the same time every night anyway).

I am not a big fan of lying to kids so will have to make the discovery - and buy her an ice-cream- soon. It's just so cute!

And ours comes round at 3pm and 6pm in summer so that may get a bit difficult!

CirrhosisByTheSea · 08/04/2010 20:33

That really is cute, Adair....I bet the 'bedtime bell' will go down in the family history

agree with you though, I wouldn't have the heart to keep that going for more than a few days but it's very sweet while it lasts!

Nessarose · 08/04/2010 20:35

We tell ours that when the music is play ing they have run out of Ice cream. Fortunatly it does not come round were we are.

dinkystinky · 08/04/2010 20:35

Ah that's sweet. DS1 used to say music, music for the first couple of weeks - sadly after that he realised it was ice cream music (damn park ice cream van) so started saying ice cream ice cream - I had to tell him it was the ice cream man going home to bed.

pollywollydoodle · 08/04/2010 20:36

dh calls it the childcatcher van music...dd worked out that it was an ice cream van when she was about 5!

cupofteaplease · 08/04/2010 20:40

Our dds always cried, 'Oh no, it's the bedtime monster!', when the ice cream van trundled up the road around bedtime. Goodness knows where they got that idea from.

Fast forward to this year, and now it's simply the ice cream van.

However, should the house phone (which is rarely in use) start to ring, then the bedtime monster is definitely on its way and they run for cover...

I have just been laughing far too much at the title of this thread so for that alone YADNBU

MaureenMLove · 08/04/2010 23:29

PollyWobby - last time I admitted that we used to call it the Child Catcher, I got flamed on here!

I can confirm that DD is a perfectly rounded 14 year old and she was not harmed in the telling of that story! In fact, she re-told it in Citizenship class a few weeks back and her teacher told me off at parents evening!

2anddone · 09/04/2010 07:25

our dog howls along with the music so my dc think its the singing van for dogs, when i was little i was always told the music meant they were sold out.

thefinerthingsinlife · 09/04/2010 09:33

pollywollydoodle and MaureenMLove my dh told my dd exactly the same, and her face was a little bit like this .

pollywollydoodle · 09/04/2010 10:42

maureenmlove...thanks for the reassurance!..we will look forward to being told off for that and so many other things
