Today, DH and I took our three DSs to Wet n Wild. While I was taking our oldest DS on a slide DH managed to slice open 2 fingers on one hand and three on the other simply by picking our youngest up when he slipped on the bottom of one of their toddler slides. His fingers were gushing blood, like a horror film. He was seen by a first aider, filled out an accident report sheet and the slide was looked at but they couldn't find what he had cut himself on. They couldn't look properly while the place was busy, so they just left it open! We left shortly afterwards as DH was in pain.

I've just sent DH to the walk in centre, as he is changing the (doubled up) sticky plasters for the fourth time and I had a look, and half the skin is missing off on of his fingers and the others are still bleeding and look bad as well.

AIBU to think they should have at least closed that slide until they had the chance to look at it properly? What if some little toddler ended up cut as well?

Also, AIBU to think DH would do anything to get out of housework

Oh my god. that's disgusting. I'd phone the council heath and safety tomorrow.

QuintessentialShadow · 08/04/2010 18:49

Do phone the council health and safety. I did when ds cut himself open on the head, and they even refused to go and clean the blood, as it was so busy. This was at a big soft play in south wimbledon btw. They did not even have a first aider there. Not even a medi kit. All they offered was cold water and paper towels! The whole soft play was closed for one day for investigations into both the equipment and procedures.

MayorNaze · 08/04/2010 18:50

ditto other advice and write a serious letter of cmplaint. sounds awful!

5inthebed · 08/04/2010 18:51

I think I'll ive them a call tomorrow then. Really, it should have been closed down. The lifeuard who went to look at the slide just had a quick feel around under the water, so not really affective.

Now I really don't believe in this normally, but I'd consider sueing over this. Mainly because they clearly don't care...how many other people could have cut themselves after you left?

I'd certainly report them, at the very least.

JustAnotherManicMummy · 08/04/2010 18:53

Did they fill out the accident book etc?

5inthebed · 08/04/2010 18:55

I don't think we would sue, doesn't seem necessary.

They did fill out the accident book. Not sure if they gave DH a copy of it though, are they meant to?

He got back about an hour ago, his two index fingers are heavily bandage up as there is no skin there to protect whats underneath, a strip of about an inch missing off both. He has to go back Sunday to see if it is healing at all. The other fingers were cleaned up and fresh denser plasters put on.

this is off. I work in HSE and in industry this would NOT be tolerated. The leisure industry are beyond lax. if you can be arsed report them to the HSE, easy via their website

AgentZigzag · 08/04/2010 23:15

Perhaps you should get some piccys of your DHs fingers? If you can do it without spewing all over them, I'd be the same

justallovertheplace · 08/04/2010 23:20

No idea, but I love that it's called wet n wild

kitkatqueen · 08/04/2010 23:30

Hiya, I just wanted to say that actually, it wouldn't be unreasonable for you to sue if this begins to cause your husband problems.

I know that it seems we live in a culture of blaming other people instead of taking responsability ourselves, but your husband wasn't doing something reckless, he was picking up your child and has ended up with whats sounds like a really nasty cut

If it interferes with his job, then he should take it further imo. If nothing else I would write a letter to the management asking for compensation, your day out was cut short and spoilt, they may only give you a voucher to use next time, but .... Its your call how far you take it

Lutyens · 08/04/2010 23:37

Oh My God! I know soft play centres are a slice of hell but this laissez-faire attitude is unbelievable. I hate the suing culture, but this case justifies suing! I shudder to think how they would react if a child had cut his/her hand

Buzzybb · 08/04/2010 23:51

Plse report this to the HSE I agree with porcamiseria it is only a few minutes of your time and may prevent another nasty accident, these places will not shut down part of a play structure if at all possible as it means a staff member standing at the slide so one less person on the floor and can affect revenue [people will complain and ask for discount/money back even though it is for their child's safety.
Hope you DH will be ok soon

Mermaidspam · 09/04/2010 00:10

Please do report this, I've heard of this happening to a few people there (I presume it's the same one - North Tyneside?).

My BIL sliced his shoulder open coming down one of the slides there.

5inthebed · 09/04/2010 07:48

MermaidSpam, it was the North Tyneside one.

I've emailed the NT council this morning, and voiced my concerns.

Thanks you all for your help, I wouldnt have thought about doing that.

DH is going into work tomorrow, but he is a delivery driver, and isn't meant to be doing any lifting or driving so we will see how that goes down! Visions of him having to go on the sick while he heals.

Taken a picture of one of his hands when he was changin the plasters, one bandaged finger, and the cuts are horrible. He is really stupid though, only got the doctor to look at the two finers he thouht were the worse, and the others are just as bad.

OP posts:
LynetteScavo · 09/04/2010 08:01

This is really awful! I really do hope you take action against them, especially as it seems your DH isn't the first person to be injured there. Something needs to be done to prevent any more people being hurt.

damnedchilblains · 09/04/2010 08:28

How awful is that I would definitely report them what if that ws a child, even if it wsn't it could have been so much worse. Not closing it is surely negligent

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 09/04/2010 08:31

If he has to take time off work, you are perfectly reasonable to put in a claim against them. Especially if they have previous incidents of this sort. If I were their lawyer (and this is what I do for a living) I'd be advising them to settle up quick smart.
