to arrange for an estate agent to value the house when I'm at work and only DH is here

because I am too embarrassed to see their response when they see the state of our house, and because it might shock DH into realising that actually, yes, we do need to paint the stairs and landing, and in fact decluttering is not a dirty word?

He seems to think that Life of Grime is a lifestyle program

oh.....and come back and tell us (nosey moo icon) what they say!

OrmRenewed · 07/04/2010 23:29

I suspect I'll be too embarrassed.

I keep on top of it most of the time - it's usually clean and reasonably tidy - but over the holidays when DH and the DC are at home and I am not......it's a disaster.

Problem is they are all hoarders and scruffy buggers. I am the only one who sees mess apparently.

LMAO, you have to do this, perhaps with hidden cameras I would love to do it to DP to get him to finally sort out house but seeing as we don't live together, he would probably tell the estate agent to pee off.

I'm picturing a well-coiffed young man in a suit picking his way through the playmobil with a handkerchief to his nose.

You may have to prime the well-coiffed young man though to actually tell the truth.

The lovely well pressed suitsters I've dealt with in the past were very polite - rather too polite I had to drag suggestions out of them. But still an inspired idea.

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 09:54

Well I've done it!

Coming round at 3pm. I think I detected a quiver of nervousness in DH's voice when I told him. Another coming round on Monday.

yay! let us know how it goes! hopefully it will shame dh into a life of cleanliness

thisisnotwhoyouthink · 08/04/2010 11:37

Classic!!

ImSoNotTelling · 08/04/2010 11:39

Oh that is just GENIUS

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 13:31

Just had a slightly huffy call from DH 'if you are gonig to arrange for a mortgage consultant to call me you might have the decency to tell me first'. Oops . I spoke to them last night when DH was out but they needed to speak to him as well.

Still he is getting the impression that things are happening now.

Valued for a ridiculous amt of money I wouldn't pay it. However it has a garage and that makes it a rare beast in our area. Annoyingly he didn't look around as they had it on the market for us a few years back so knew the basic layout. Which is annoying for 2 reasons: 1 he didn't see the new kitchen and bathroom. 2 He didn't make any tut tut noises over the state of the place

But it the valuation leaves us some leeway to drop the price for a quick sale. Nothing is moving much atm so 10k less than expected might help.

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 15:23

Oh this is a good idea Orm.

My DP is a builder and the house is a collection of half finished projects - garage half converted, need new windows, he has bought them but only installed 1 out of 5, roof needs to go on outhouse, fences need replacing on one side (other side done). And loads of tiny things which need finishing.

He just doesn't see the need to do it immedoately and it drives be bonkers. He is (apparently) taking a week of in May to finish all the jobs.

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 15:49

Ha! Must be a common habit with builders then getorf. DH was a carpenter/builder until about 18m ago.

OP posts:
GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 15:53

Think is a definite thing with builders to be honest.

DP's 3 brothers are all builders/carpenters as well and all 4 wives live in half completed projects.

Useless buggers. But he is lovely in all other areas so will forgive (ish)

OrmRenewed · 08/04/2010 15:56

Dad was a nuclear engineer and knew all about electricity and just how dangerous it was. Which explains why ours was the only house I ever knew with sockets hanging off the walls

isn't that the same with all professions though? there is a saying along the lines of
'cobblers' wives go barefoot and doctors' wives die young'..

..and the fact that cobblers are included shows how old the saying is!

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/04/2010 16:03

Lol Orm!

It's typical.

Mind you, I am a project manager and get in a state planning for Christmas, leading to panic buying and tears every year. DP laughs at the fact I can plan multi-million pound projects at work but wing it at home.

thumbwitch · 08/04/2010 16:03

here's a bit to show you're Not Alone

Shame the estate agent bloke didn't go round the house though - he might have increased your valuation if he'd seen the new fittings.
