not to go and watch DH do the London marathon

am I? I just think it would be a nightmare with a toddler and a baby. Would have to travel by train and then tube and I am just imagining it would be a nightmare in general let alone toilet stops, nappy changing and feeding.

I know I should support him but it's not the first time he's done it and he's doing loads of other races which I can go to.

I wouldn't go. I don't think you're unreasonable at all.

overmydeadbody · 07/04/2010 12:50

YANBU

Supporting your DH do the marathon doesn't mean actually being there when he crosses the finish line.

Don't feel bad, presumably he will understand?

deaddei · 07/04/2010 12:50

God no.
Stay at home.
Have a nice tea waiting -perhaps even afters

migola · 07/04/2010 12:55

good. yes OMDB he says he understands although I think he's disappointed. I don't think MIL will understand though

It's 26 miles long - how are you supposed to 'watch' anyway?

LadyBiscuit · 07/04/2010 12:59

My father was running a race the day I was born so my mother has never had any compunction in telling him she wouldn't be coming to watch! Tell us his number though and I'll give him a cheer

slug · 07/04/2010 13:00

Which start is he leaving from? DD and I, will be going to watch the start (we live nearby) and will wave him off in your place if you want.

migola · 07/04/2010 13:02

Exactly TrillianAstra, I've been to watch him recently in freezing wind and rain, kids in the pram, me soaking wet, and we MISSED him!
I like that idea LadyBiscuit, loads of MNers cheering him on

You'll get a better view from the TV. The toilet facilities are not great -long queues and blocked toilets in my experience. Public transport that day would be just too busy for it to be enjoyable.Maybe make an extra donation to his charity instead.

migola · 07/04/2010 13:03

not sure slug, but he's not an elite runner so I guess it's the other one? I'll find out and let you know!

Well, I've done it but then DH has also turned out to support me in various marathons, so it's a bit tit for tat in our household.

These days though I'd be inclined to limit the amount of 'supporting' that goes on, in favour of doing something fun with the kids - preferably something that involves sitting down such as a quick boat trip on the river, perhaps?

Or just give it a miss: let's face it, it's always really hard to spot people in the crowd and meeting people afterwards, particularly at London, is not easy. And DH never used to appreciate having to pick up the childcare 15 minutes after he'd finished because I was fed up of jollying two rather tired and grumpy small people along .

cleanandclothed · 07/04/2010 13:05

No, I don't think you are being unreasonable but I do think it would be possible. Where do you come from? How long will DH take to run it? This year I think you can sign up for a text service to tell you exactly where you are, so, if you know the route well (or research it) it would be possible to be at a given spot when he passes it without too much hassle.

Eg race starts at 9.45. He plans to run it in 4 hours, so say 9 minute miles. You choose somewhere around the 9 mile mark (between 9 and 10 is normally not too busy). You aim to get there around 10.55, get a text at about 10.45 to check where he is, stand around for 20-25 minutes, go and find Starbucks/restaurant for lunch, and make your way to the finish.

All the Jubilee line stations south of Westminster have lifts (Waterloo is broken atm but should be fixed by then).

Just to repeat - I do not think you are unreasonable - I will be doing it with a toddler but not a baby - but if you want to it needn't be too stressful.

MaureenMLove · 07/04/2010 13:06

I'll be there too. Along with Kbear, I hope. We'll give him a cheer and a jelly baby!

I love going to cheer them on, but tbh, I've only started doing it every year, since DD was old enough not to worry about.

Who's he running for?

migola · 07/04/2010 13:12

I've done it when I was 7 months pregnant & with a toddler in tow and it was a bit of PITA even though it was lovely seeing him on the way round. DD was in nappies then so was easier.

I'd try my best to watch but not get too bothered if it is all too complicated. However, dss2 and his GF ran last year's Marathon and using the live text service made it much easier to decide where to be and when.

migola · 07/04/2010 13:22

wish I'd have known about the text thing last year!
he's running for help the aged (well I am nearly 40
