I had a tiff with my DH today on the way home from visiting friends. He drove 90 mph on the motorway, 70 mph in a road clearly marked 50 mph and then 55-60 mph on a road marked 40 mph. I made a remark about how dangerous I thought it was, which he rubbished. He then came out with his stock remark 'When you learn to drive, you can do what you want'. (I failed my test last year and will start lessons again in the summer, when I have the time off and have scraped together the money). To which I gave my stock reply (this is an old argument, btw): 'It's my business when our kids are in the car'. Humphy silence followed on both sides (and he slowed down).

It just makes me so mad.

AIBU, though? Do all you drivers regularly speed? he certainly wasn't the only one whizzing down the dual carriageway at way over the speed limit. He doesn't speed on residential / town roads, btw, just A roads and motorways. And he is not usually a twat.

usually only on motorways. when i'm late, or someone in the middle lane is pissing me off.

NOT imn town or built up places.

AMumInScotland · 06/04/2010 17:01

I do sometimes exceed the 70mph on motorways, when the road is clear and the weather good. Also the 50mph limit on one stretch of road near us which used to be 60mph which was put up as part of a general change and not for any specific reason. But I don't normally seed on a 50mph road or lower - there's usually good reason for the limit, which means things might happen that even the best driver can't avoid (children, dogs, traffic coming out from side roads, etc), and I don't do 20 above the limit, ever!

I thnk everyone in the car has a right to an opinion about a reasonable speed, specially as you say when your children are there. Even if he's a good driver, he won't be able to stop in the same distance at 90 as he does at 70, or at 60 as he would at 40 - that's the major reason for the limit, not because it's not possible to drive along the road at higher speeds in good conditions, but because your stopping distance is much higher and things could happen without warning.

Fizzfiend · 06/04/2010 17:03

with the others....only on motorways and when the road is clear and good conditions. Remember that over 100 and you're caught, you lost your license automatically.

TrinityIsFuckingTrying · 06/04/2010 17:05

not automatically at all fizz

penguin73 · 06/04/2010 17:09

I tend not to, but only through fear of being caught and getting points/fine rather than anything else! Exceeding 70mph on the motorway is almost normal practise though...

southeastastra · 06/04/2010 17:10

usually 80 on the motorway, and even then i feel like a slow driver, most must be over 100

Smithagain · 06/04/2010 17:22

No, I don't speed. But I constantly have someone driving too close behind me because I seem to be the only person in this entire County who can read speed limit signs.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 06/04/2010 17:27

No. Sometimes I look and find I am over the speed limit so I slow down.

  1. it's a limit not a target
  2. it's there for a reason
  3. it's against the law and you don't get to pick and choose which bits apply to you and which don't and if you (by you I actually mean him ) get a ticket then don't go moaning about it.
Eglu · 06/04/2010 17:32

I would speed on fast roadds like motorways. I would never speed in a 30 limit though.

tummytime · 06/04/2010 17:35

Very occasionally speed on the motorway but otherwise try not to. Have been caught out sometimes when driving down a local derestricted hill at about 50 and then come into the 30mph limit very soon after the hill but usually have braked enough. I don't think speed cameras are a tax on motorists though as Top Gear etc would have people believe. They are a tax on speeding twats and a good thing too.

Intergalactic · 06/04/2010 17:36

I do on the motorway - about 80/85 if good weather and the roads are clear. Otherwise generally never - and definitely never in a 30 limit.

2old4thislark · 06/04/2010 17:38

Always on motorways (mainly 80-85ish) and dual carriageways . 35ish in a 30

Miraculously I have a clean license though I did get done by a speed camera at 35 in a 30 and attended a speed awareness course

I KNOW the speed limit is there for a good reason but I find it's so hard to go that slow - sorry!

Intergalactic · 06/04/2010 17:39

Reading your OP again, I'd be pissed off with DH if I was you, particularly about the 40 limit. Generally it'll be 40 because there are junctions where people will be pulling out, or houses a bit back from the road - the limit is in place because going 60 in that sort of situation is dangerous.

Maybe bring it up with him on an occasion when you're not in the car, try to have an objective discussion about it?

sincitylover · 06/04/2010 17:46

I have got three points for going 37 in a 30 mile limit.

Yes it was over but it was early Sunday morning and deserted.

I couldn't afford the speed awareness course (it was £95) but I do watch my speed now of course.

Have been up to 80 on motorway but tbh hate motorway and really fast driving.

Feel most comfortable at about 50

90% of the people who go through my village do yet its funny how not many mners do. It must be everyone else

bronze · 06/04/2010 17:52

MissJackson I have had similar conversations right down to 'when you drive...'

MrsJohnDeere · 06/04/2010 17:52

Yes on motorways.

Never in 20 or 30 mph zones.

GrendelsMum · 06/04/2010 17:54

I'd be furious with your DH, if he's doing this regularly with you and the DC in the car. This is really astonishingly inappropriately fast - I think that he genuinely is putting your DC in danger.

I once heard a racing driver (can't remember who) talk about driving, and it's made a lasting impression on me. He said that most ordinary people in ordinary cars drive at a speed which is too fast for them to deal with any problems - so it's fine so long as nothing goes wrong, but as soon as they need to brake suddenly, or swerve suddenly, they cannot help but be in serious trouble. He talked about his experience of being in a road accident when driven by someone in a family, and seeing how helpless the driver was in an ordinary family car and without professional training. He said it was absolutely terrifying how out of control he was.

follygirl · 06/04/2010 17:55

I do drive faster than 70 on a motorway but again it depends on the conditions so if it's dry I would drive 85 or so.
I don't speed on 30 mph roads as they are there for a reason. That advert about the child who has been killed in a road accident really resonates with me. I also never talk on my mobile phone or fiddle with the satnav when I'm driving. I try to remember just how dangerous cars are.
I was hospitalised after a car accident caused by a careless (not speeding) driver and it still affects me.

deaddei · 06/04/2010 17:55

Sincitylover- I too have been caught doing 37 in a 30 zone, and am going on the speed awareness thing next week.
That's a farce- they gave me 3 dates, times available - 7.30 in the morning or 6.00 at night- in a place 14 miles away (so I'll have to leave at 6am to allow for traffic).
Better not get speed to get there in time....
Has anyone been on one of these??

I do not speed, DH used to until he got 3 points and a fine that we couldn't afford and now he sticks to the limits and gets very angry with his family who do what they like. Driving laws are there to protect other road users and pedestrians and people who flout these laws are ignorant/ arrogant criminals.

Well I can complain about the 7.30 start as I have 2 children to sort out as it's the Easter hols!
They had a slot at 11 or 2 but by the time I received the letter, those times had been taken. They only give you 12 weeks from the date of the offence to book.
I still had to pay £95.... I didn't want points, and yes of course it's a punishment-I was over the speed limit.
I wonder what sort of clientele it will be - boy racers or menopausal women. Ah well, I shall arrange my face into a suitable expression and get it over with.
