Would any sort of bribery belp?especially as she has a party coming up.

Wineonafridaynight · 05/04/2010 12:08

I would say she is approaching an age now where she can't really be forced to take medicine. She needs to weigh up the options of pain or taking the medicine. I hated swallowing tablets at that age (not the same as she won't take any medicine) but eventually taught myself to take tablets by swallowing tic tacs whole!

Do you think taking her to the Dr may help in that he/she may be able to help her see sense?

fidelma · 05/04/2010 12:14

Take her to the DR. My Dr friends give their DC painkillers (don't know what the proper termanology is )up the bum.Not my idea of fun but it was the only thing they could do for their DC.

She must be quite upset about it.I could never swallow tablets but could take liquid.

Wineonafridaynight · 05/04/2010 12:15

Sorry that post possibly sounded insenstive. I certainly didn't mean it to!I meant to start it with I don't have any practical advice (but was having a conversation at the same time).

Good luck. I hope shes Ok.

EggcentricaGallumbits · 05/04/2010 12:15

fidelma · 05/04/2010 12:17

Suppositories thats what I ment.

Good luck I hope she is OK and you manage to do your disertation.

cornsilk · 05/04/2010 12:17

poor you and ddWill GP or practice nurse have a chat with her about it? The tic tacs idea is a good one!

EggcentricaGallumbits · 05/04/2010 12:19

bloody GP not bloody open as bank bloody holiday.

would have to drive 15 miles to the bloody walk in centre and wait for 5 bloody hours to be seen.

not sure if it's that bad.

what a nightmare
Can you bribe her?

SilveryMoon · 05/04/2010 12:27

Personally, I'd start removing privilages if she refuses to take meds.
I would aske her to write a list of all the things she can do, such as take the meds or not take them and then get her to write down all the consequences of each choice. Once she has decided what to do for herself, she might decide it is in her best interest to take the meds.
tell her, no party, no tv, no bike etc etc for each dose she does not take. I'd say an hour less of normal tv time and so on.......

lollyhop2girls · 05/04/2010 12:34

She's 12! Not 2! Tell her if she doesnt take it she sits in her room on her bed with no TV or anything until she does take it.
If she still doesnt take it, start taking a £ from her pocket money for every 10 minutes she refuses.

Its a power struggle thats all and who's more powerful?

Suppositories - am I missing something? She's 12 right?

(ps I did read that she was slightly aspergerish but I assume if only slightly then this is more a case of princess behaviour than aspergers behaviour?)

EggcentricaGallumbits · 05/04/2010 12:37

nope lollyhop. has big huge issues with food and textures. it isn't princessish - it's real.

belive me i'd be the first to tell me and her to pull myself together and bloody get on with it.

tried that. doesn't work.
tis a bleeding nightmare.

DS#1 is like this. It isn't that he won't, he simply can't. He gags and throws it up if he persists. When he had swine flu I had to open the capsules and mix them with chocolate spread.

EggcentricaGallumbits · 05/04/2010 12:38

she's OK for now. has movie on. will wait and see and hope she improves.

My litlle girl had threadworms a few weeks back so to treat her and my nearly 2 year old I ground up crushable tablet in a pestle and mortar, bit the top ooff a mini creme egg and spooned the powder in, mixed up a little in the sugary goo and poped it it their mouths - didn't even notice!

Would she eat this?

EggcentricaGallumbits · 05/04/2010 12:52

only if she didn't know it was in there - unfortunately too old to fool in this way - she'd know something was up if i presented her with chocolate every 6 hours.

good idea though and very useful if one off doses needed.

lollyhop2girls · 05/04/2010 14:41

Sorry, didnt know that, was only giving advice on the info I had.

Cant understand why they can eat chocolate but not medicine.. ?

My kids can eat chocolate but have issues with the texture of sprouts...hmm...

MrsChopstick · 05/04/2010 14:58

My DD is only 2 but has recurrent tonsillitis. Nightmare getting meds into her - they couldn't even manage it at a&e when her temp was going silly. Paracetamol suppositories have made getting the temp down easier. With a 12 year old though??? A nice doc prescribed some antibiotics that are only one dose per day of 3ml for 3 days of the week. It's called something like Zythromycin??? Has made things much easier. Good luck and hope she gets over it. It is contagious, btw.
