to think Hollie's parents should close her facebook page?

There was an article in the paper today about Hollie (can't remember her sirname) who sang Eidleweiss on Britains Got Talent.

It said that paedophiles have been targeting her facebook page and sending her messages. She has never seen these messages as her mother monitors her page but seeing as she is only 11, AIBU to think that either the parents shouldn't let her have the page, or facebook should close it down? Particularly if paedophiles are targeting her!

Yanbu its insane! If that was the case as the responsible parent i would close down her account.

thisisyesterday · 03/04/2010 22:58

is it her personal page? or a page set up about her?
because the 2 are different and her mother may not be able to shut it down

Coldhands · 03/04/2010 23:00

From the way it sounded, it was her personal page that her mother reads first, so she says.

The Sun's straight to the point headline

Yes, her parents should close her Facebook page. They are idiots.

Lulumaam · 03/04/2010 23:03

and putting it on the front of the newspaper wil surely only attract more unwelcome attention for her
YANBU

thisisyesterday · 03/04/2010 23:03

bizarre. you aren't even supposed to use it if you're under 13

Quattrocento · 03/04/2010 23:03

You are not allowed to have a FB account until you are 13, as I found out when virtually DD's entire school year got into trouble through a facebook squabble ...

She just shouldn't have an account.

DuelingFanjo · 03/04/2010 23:04

Some people will do anything to stay in the public eye, eh.

Sorry - but that aricle makes no sense at all. I fear this is just a hysterical reaction if not an attempt to keep her in the papers.

yuk.

thisisyesterday · 03/04/2010 23:05

i just searced FB and can only find "fan" pages iyswim?

so assume it's one of those that her mum runs. so it is "her" page, but the account won't be in her name...

Coldhands · 03/04/2010 23:05

Exactly. My sister (12) has had one for a couple of years, all her friends are on there. What is the bloody point in there being an age limit when all they have to do is lie about their date of birth.

DuelingFanjo · 03/04/2010 23:06

and yes... whatever the truth of the story, paedophiles or not... it is utterly ridiculous that this young girl has a facebook page which is completely public. WTF do they think they are doing!

Poor poor girl.

wukter · 03/04/2010 23:06

Don't see the harm as long as the prents clean it up first. She probably wants to check the internet for stories about herself. At least with fb she can look at a site that the parents know is fine because they've edited it themselves.

Coldhands · 03/04/2010 23:08

"I fear this is just a hysterical reaction if not an attempt to keep her in the papers."

I think you could be right. She recorded a song that went no where, now parents have set up own label and she is doing an album. Smacks of publicity. And she came across as a spoilt madam when she wanted to sing again, which I felt was unfair as if one of the children who were dancing fell, they wouldn't have been allowed to start again.

thingamajig · 03/04/2010 23:17

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you have to be know someone at all to send them a message. For example you can send a message when you invite someone to be a friend.

So her account is not necessarily unprotected. But still yuck. A teenage friend stupidly put a pic of her breasts up and got attention from a 48 year old.

Coldhands · 04/04/2010 11:52

No thingamajig you don't need to know someone. Most people can receive messages from people that are not on their friends list. Her parents are being irresponsible and they should take the page down IMO.

mayorquimby · 04/04/2010 12:15

If she closed it down then she wouldn't get in the papers and you wouldn't be talking about her.
desperate attempt to keep her 15 minutes going.

SixtyFootDoll · 04/04/2010 12:18

Unfortunatley does smack of attention seeking from Mum.

posieparker · 04/04/2010 12:19

They showed what parents they are when they begged Simon Cowell on that program.

Greensleeves · 04/04/2010 12:21
