To eat tinned sardines in front of DH who finds them repulsive

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 12:15

DH has a bit of a fish intolerance, particularly for anything like sardines/mackerel.

However, my WeightWatchers leader mentioned last week that they're really good for your heart (which I knew already tbh) and women should eat about 2 portions p/w. So I've stocked up. I cracked a tin open last night in front of DH and he wrinkled his nose and said I was vile.

Should I eat them in another room or should DH just get on with it? I have to cook all manner of things for him that I find less than appetising.

He can leave the room if it bothers him that much.

Lonnie · 01/04/2010 12:24

I would just eat them when he isnt around

this is not in my opinion about being or not being unresonable its about being tollerate towards people we love

kingprawntikka · 01/04/2010 12:30

I'm with Lonnie on this. Surely you could eat them when he's out. I don't like maggots and if my husband was someone who went fishing I wouldn't think it very considerate if he sorted out his fishing maggot boxes near me . I think it just about caring enough not to do stuff when you know it will bother him.

cece · 01/04/2010 12:33

How funny I have just eaten a tin of pilchards in front of my DC! They were quite pleased when I finished and left the table..

I think it depends how much he hates them. Or you could be kind and eat them away from him!

nannynobnobs · 01/04/2010 12:34

If he really hates it it would be nice of you to stick to eating them when he's not around. When I was pregnant and couldn't stand the smell of coffee my DH (a big coffee lover) would take his cafetiere in the garden even if it was cold!

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 12:38

That's a goodpoint, NNN.

When I was pg, DH wasvery considerate to my many sensitivities.

I will eat them in the kitchen

oopslateagain · 01/04/2010 13:38

Oh come on, you can eat them where you like! Unless the smell makes him feel ill, then it's just nicer to eat them somewhere else.

My dh loathes Marmite, gags on the stuff, so I only eat it first thing in the morning or after he goes to bed. He won't kiss me if I've got Marmite breath!

He also hates coconut, but not in a nausea-inducing kind of way. So I'll happily munch a pile of fresh coconut in the room while he wrinkles his nose and says stuff like "eeew how CAN you eat that".

jabberwocky · 01/04/2010 13:40

CUK...

ImSoNotTelling · 01/04/2010 13:41

Mmmmmm sardines

ImSoNotTelling · 01/04/2010 13:45

Why jabberwocky? Innocuous surely?

Pikelit · 01/04/2010 13:46

Hmmm.....I perceive a spot of "don't cook fish for supper, Mother. I'm coming home with the crabs sardines" trollery.

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 13:47

CUK, yeah right. I'd come up with something a bit more provoking than a sardines debate if I were looking for a reaction

The smell doesn't make him feel ill. He just doesn't like it. This is the man who has to cross the road if we are on holiday abroad and a restaurant has a load of whole fish resting in ice outside. can't deal with fish full stop. AIBU to find this hysterical?

OP posts:
jabberwocky · 01/04/2010 13:47

It just has that feel to it for some reason..

Plus the use of the phrase "cracked open a tin"

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 13:50

Although, I must admit when i was typing out the thread title, I did wonder if anyone would think I was a CUKer.

OP posts:
ElleBing · 01/04/2010 13:53

Hang on, hang on! Let me start again....

AIBU? Hubby has the most frightful fish aversion, yet my urges tell me that I simply must crack open a tin of sardines (drizzled in mediterranean goats' droppings infused with thyme) at every opportunity. Now, I don't know if you know that they are good for your heart (probably not, you lardy gutbuckets) but I do, since I have a spiffing culinary grounding.

If anyone would like me to tell them what do do with a tin of sardines, I have the most orgasm-worthy recipe for sardines tipped onto a slice of toast with sunblush lentils. Do let me know. Just off to spin. TTFN.

Am I doing this right?

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 01/04/2010 13:59

I agree with Lonnie. You don't need to eat them in front of him.

SoupDragon · 01/04/2010 14:00

(I think you need to infer that you have a sexual fantasy involving sardines and your DH is reluctant to go along with it. That would be more impressive)

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 14:01

Must try harder. Drats.

OP posts:
catinthehat2 · 01/04/2010 14:02

"Am I doing this right?"

Yes. It's very good actually. ALMOST TOO GOOD.

I'm off to get my pitchfork.

oopslateagain · 01/04/2010 14:03

much better!

If it were me, I'd be pouring them onto a plate to allow the delicious aroma to properly permeate the air...

...and then shoveling them into my mouth with much lip-smacking and slurping and "Mmmmm"-ing.

Dh says I'm evil.

kingprawntikka · 01/04/2010 14:16

Much better now. Can I just check.. are they any old tinned sardines or M and S sardines!

ElleBing · 01/04/2010 14:56

Waitrose, sweedie. All organically sustainable and re-traceable back to their patch of ocean and fully recycled.

OP posts:
kingprawntikka · 01/04/2010 15:02

Pleased to hear it and I presume you can identify both the fish and fishermen by name!!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 01/04/2010 15:04

YABU- If it was me who didn't like something then my DP would eat it in another room, I would do the same for him. It's being thoughtful and considering the other persons feelings.

lizziemun · 01/04/2010 15:15

Just eat them when you want them. He can either stay or go.

Like your dh i can not stand tinned fish. But i don't complain when my dh has them. I eat things he dosen't like, he eat things i don't. it's give and take.
