I guess they have a lot of lice in Portugal or something.

thisisyesterday · 31/03/2010 22:42

you don't have to be sure about it do you?

unless yhou're a 10 week old portuguese baby?

nannynz · 31/03/2010 22:43

A lot of hot countries do shave their babies heads - it's a cultural thing.

One of my friends from Columbia shaved her babies head on his 1st birthday.

And I've worked for a client who shaved gorgeous thick black hair off their 8 week old girl - I was very sad. They did it so her hair would grow even and thick.

chegirlWILLbeserene · 31/03/2010 22:57

It is custom for some Asian cultures to shave their babies heads at 1 year too.

I am assuming its common practice in lots of cultures.

Its not harmful, cruel or even slightly disturbing.

I heard that Muslims shave the baby at 8 days and donate the weight of the hair in gold to the poor.

I always wondered-do they just go and give a gold coin to the nearest homeless person? And how much does that much gold cost? It can't be every much.

I'm sure there is an official ruling on this.

nannynz · 31/03/2010 23:35

Another of my clients who was a practising Muslim when she cut the babies hair, so not shaved and it was after aged one. She weighed his hair and then converted it the weight/price of gold and then gave the value in money to poor people in the town they lived in. I thought it was a good idea.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/04/2010 05:28

Butterpie, if I'd done that to my daughter at aged eight days that would have cost me $nothing. At aged one, I'm guessing it would have cost me...hmm, gold is currently $AU1213 per ounce, so that would have cost me about $AU60.

Madascheese · 01/04/2010 09:21

is cultural

exh wanted me to do this for our son when he was born. I drew the line and said when he could bring himself to shave our PFB's head himself, no problem.

I do seem to recall he used the words stroppy bitch at me.

Ah those were the days...

(not against it BTW, just couldn't bring myself to do it)

WhoIsAsking · 01/04/2010 09:22

I am really trying to give a shit.

EccentricaGallumbits · 01/04/2010 09:23

lots of cultures shave babies heads. fuzzy baby stubble is so soft and cute.

stops cradlecap too (i think - although may have dreamt that one)

bruffin · 01/04/2010 09:23

I my dad is from cyprus and they used to do the same. My mum reckoned they thought the hair would grow back thick and curly.

pitterpatterfeet · 01/04/2010 09:24

They do it so that the baby's hair grows in lovely and thick - apparently it works according to my hairdress, although his wife wouldn't let him do it to their baby!

emmymama · 01/04/2010 11:41

my dd is 1 and i dont think you would even notice if i shaved her hair..

claw3 · 01/04/2010 11:51

What is it you are not sure about?
