To be irritated by my cleaner?

I'm very lucky to have a cleaner, I am a lazy sod etc etc. BUT - AIBU to be irritated by the following:

She comes at a different time AND day every week, as there's always some excuse. She wants to talk to me (I want to bury my head in emails) and will actually follow me around to do so. Subtle hints don't work. She bangs around even when I've said pointedly "I'm putting DS down for a nap now" and then when he wakes up and cries she says "ooh, I think he means it..." She really smells of cigarette smoke....

Get another cleaner.

Plumm · 31/03/2010 11:59

Get a different cleaner!

Greensleeves · 31/03/2010 11:59

get rid of her

LauraIngallsWilder · 31/03/2010 11:59

I would be annoyed by that
I wouldnt let anyone who smells of cigarettes clena my house

I would get rid

And clean house myself (the essential stuff doesnt take that long really)

Job done

[pouty face] But it took ages to even find this one!

Yes....ok...you're right...

I am also lucky enough to have a cleaner. The one before this one always wanted to talk and tell me about all her troubles and difficulties and so on. Everytime I got the courage to sack her she told me something so terrible (husband made redundant etc) that I couldnt' do it. She was a terrible cleaner too.

One day I told her that my hours at work were reduced so I was going to do it myself (I lied). I only earn about £1.50 per hour more than I pay her (but I hate cleaning and have a bad back sometimes) so I feel I am entitled to have good work done and not be annoyed with the person. Now I have a lady who comes when I am out so I come home to a lovely clean home. Bliss.

You can do it!

canucktraveler · 31/03/2010 12:18

Yep, I had a cleaner as well. Came when she wanted, etc. I got rid of her. Find another one, it's your hard earned money.

traceybath · 31/03/2010 12:19

Use an agency - you pay a little more but much better generally speaking.

Although I never put dc's down for a nap when cleaning is being done.

GypsyMoth · 31/03/2010 12:22

have you tried sitting her down and talking to her about these issues??

kansasmum · 31/03/2010 12:26

And you are PAYING her? Does she do any cleaning or just follow you round talking? She sounds lonely but you aren't paying her to talk to you so I would get rid of her and find someone else. I don't have a cleaner at present but my friend went through 4 before she found one that actually cleaned properly and was reliable.

freelancescientist · 31/03/2010 12:27

Get a different cleaner. I had one like this - random days, times, sometimes not at all.

Got an agency (molly maid) - every other week, same money to me. Dead reliable, no chatting, used their own stuff, and someone to complain to if things weren't good (but they always were).

TBH the tidying up before they come is the biggest thing that puts me off getting them again (stopped when I was on ML and couldn't afford it).

mistressploppy · 31/03/2010 15:03

Not a bad idea about the agency - will investigate. Am too much of a coward to confront her - was hoping the hints would work...

Feeling a bit guilty now as she does get quite a lot done despite the talking.....but she's not as thorough as I'd like

I would talk to her! You are paying for her services so you need to be clear with what you want her to do. Just be brave.

If there is no improvement, then fair enough sack her.

Try word of mouth, but having said that good cleaners are hard to find. My mum has had the same lady for over 10 years, and she is worth her weight in gold!
