To think we should get a refund ?

My ds and 3 other children went to the cinema last weekend to see a PG film, this was the first time they went without an adult. They were charged over 18 (adult) prices even though they are 13 and 1 is 14 years old. No way do they look 18.I have complained about this and have been told the member of staff thought they looked over 18 ! They were not even offered student prices, just full whack £9.70 adult prices
I feel this cinema is taking advantage of children who don't know what they are doing and they are being greedy and unfair.

I think they should give the children a refund.

None of them said "we're students"? I'd have known to do that at 13/14. They're not children who don't know what they're doing, they're 14 year olds! 14 year olds know about concession prices. Bus tickets, passes into parks, it's hardly a new concept for a person that age.

You can't expect a cinema to refund tickets when the ticket buyers didn't mention that they were eligible for a concession price.

You're sure they didn't just buy concession tickets, pocket the difference and claim the cinema ripped them off?

Why didnt they say they were teenagers? Ds is 14 and I would be cross with him had he paid adult price.13 and 14 are old enough to know what they are doing.

loumum3 · 31/03/2010 07:55

They didn't even realise what they had been charged...boys eh ? I noticed it when I only has 30p change from a tenner !

"boys eh?" It's not about their gender. My ds is 14 and a boy and if he made this mistake it wouldnt be because he's a boy. Girls are quite capable of making the same mistake.

loumum3 · 31/03/2010 08:01

Oh well, maybe this doesn't apply to your son but it certainly does to this group of boys and to be honest 99 % of the boys I have had round over the years. We had one once who didn't know if he had sugar in his tea as his Mum always did it ! They have never been anywhere where they have had to pay so didn't realise they had to ask for a child ticket. I just can't see how someone would think they look over 18.

PErhaps that was his mum's fault rather than his. SOrry I hate gender stereotyping and the idea that the male of the species is incapable.

acunningstunt · 31/03/2010 08:05

Do they have the receipt? I don't think you could expect the cinema to address the issue without one - as someone said, they could have just as easily spent the difference on 10 Marlboro Lights.

loumum3 · 31/03/2010 08:07

True, probably his Mum's fault. I'm not keen on stereotyping either but the difference between the boys and girls when they are all here is amazing ! generally the boys are really quite dopey and shy and the girls are sharp as razors and very quick, the boys really don't know what has hit them !

I don't think they should get a refund, its a valuable lesson for the boys to know what they are asking for and how much something should cost.

rainbowinthesky · 31/03/2010 08:08

Maybe that just your sons and his group of friends. Cant say I'd say the same about the teenagers I know.

loumum3 · 31/03/2010 08:09

True, but shame they had to do it with my money as opposed to theirs !

A lesson learnt. Put it down to experience and move on.

Girls would have done exactly the same. Poor boys, they get a rough deal!

agasarecool · 31/03/2010 08:18

I think you should get a refund, and (based on personal experience) I bet if they'd wanted to get into a 15 or even an 18 they would've got in no bother.

I would be cross, but at the end of the day its a good learning experience for them - I doubt they will make the same mistake again!

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 31/03/2010 12:59

Maybe you should let them pay for things now and then. How do you get to 14 without having been anywhere where you have to pay?

loumum3 · 31/03/2010 19:08

Easy, they have only ever been out with adults.

I got the refund, the company agreed the children didn't look anything like 18 and said the member of staff had been told not to charge children adult prices.

rainbowinthesky · 31/03/2010 19:09

I would give them far more opportunities to be out without adults.
