So his lorship has decided we should spend this years bonus on a new car. Currently he as an estate car from work and I have a 4 seater hatchback. He says we should give up the estate and get 'something fun to drive'.

My problem is at the weekends we like do go out as a family and all five cramped in my car means the kids just wind each other up and I end up tearing my hair out with them sometimes. I can't see the point of doing this. AIBU?

If he earned the bonus it's a little awkward for you to insist on how he spends it, unless of course the family will go hungry as a result of his choice.

How about a compromise? Keep the estate (assuming it's the bigger car) and buy the 2 seater? Or ditch both cars and buy the sports car and a family friendly one?

Disclaimer: I'm a petrolhead who would delight in having a 2 seater at my disposal!

give both cars and get two new (not necessarily brand new) cars. A small mpv picasso / touran etc and a two seater. We have two cars only one of which will seat all the family.

oldenglishspangles · 30/03/2010 22:33

give up both your existing cars...

a 2 seater and an estate works for us!

my DS1 recently suggested we get a 2 seater car. When i asked where would DS2 sit he calmly replied "oh stick him in the boot"

sorry i know it doesn't help your situation but it made me laugh...

Thing is I hate driving his estate. It's like a fliping bus. And he refuses to drive mine as 'it's not a proper car'

So if we do what he wants, I end up doing all the driving at the weekends whilst the kids play merry hell in the back.

As for Vallhala's 'he earned it' post. You were joking right?

If he wants 'something fun to drive' then you ditch both cars and get a car which is comfy but not bus-like for the family and a fun car. I suspect that his bonus will stretch slightly less far with two cars to buy ...

DH did this a few years ago.
We had a seven seater and a two-seater (3 kids), which should have been workable in theory but we used to share lifts with another family for weekend parties, activities etc for DS1, which then became impossible.

If you have more than 2 kids you just need 2 reasonably sized cars once they all start doing separate things. (Plus we live in the country.)

Having said that, I felt DH needed to get this thing out of his system, and as he'd worked so hard and flogged himself travelling all over the place I felt a heel putting my foot dow.

Didn't take too long for him to realise I was right!.
