To Wish That Nursery Wouldn't Send "Difficult" Fruit Home With DD?

MadameOvary · 30/03/2010 16:00

DD gets a fruit bag every week home from nursery. She saw the clementine, she wanted it.
Cue me spending ages attempting to prise off one centimetre of peel at a time with my very inadequate fingernails, only to be anbushed with a teflon-like coating of pith underneath which I managed to remove eventually after spraying myself with sticky, stinky zest.
And then, to top it off, the bloody thing had seeds in it, which pushed all my PFB buttons so I had to remove those as well.
At which point I realised it was probably an orange not a clementine and taking a knife to it would have been more sensible

TG the damn thing was edible. If DD had made her "sour orange" face I would probably have wept.

It's ok nursery, I don't have laundry or cooking or cleaning to do, I can spend half an hour peeling a sodding orange and wiping up the mess afterwards, can't I?

Oooh, HDTU - haven't thought of that in aaaaages (am also in the same age zone) (40 at the end of the year - aaarrrggghh!).

No oranges in this house, other than if we're going to squeeze them for juice. I is lazy.

MmeLindt · 31/03/2010 10:12

I used to love HDTU. Shame you cannot play it with just 2 DC. First day of the hols and they are driving me mad already.

YANBU
Oranges are only used for squeezing in our house. Can't be bothered with the faff.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 31/03/2010 12:43

My DD says her teacher does HDTU in class, always thought it sounder a bit odd. The other favourite is everyone closes their eyes and one kid says something in a silly voice and people have to guess who's speaking. They spend hours doing these 2 games apparantly.

FalafelAtYourFeet · 31/03/2010 16:58

Just asked DD (7) and she says they play HDTU at school with the Year Sixes when it's wet play. And she says they played it at Rainbows too.

So it's still going strong!

FalafelAtYourFeet · 31/03/2010 17:01

TOTHS-

''As for oranges. Pfffft. They're the cocklodgers of the fruit world, as far as I'm concerned. It's all take take take with them - peel me, remove my pith, extact my seeds, I don't know what's wrong with you my MOTHER had no problems serving freshly squeezed orange juice every morning.''

That has just made me spit out my tea, thank you.

Can I use it as a favourite quote on Facebook?

nickelbabe · 31/03/2010 17:03

you need one of these: tupperware orange peeler

you used to get them free with so much of a purchase from tupperware.

perfect and mess-free

I play "Heads down, thumbs up" with my Yr 2 class at the end of the day on Fridays.

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 01/04/2010 03:41

If you promise to correct my spelling of extract, sure!

gtamom · 01/04/2010 05:45

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 23:11

NOBODY HAS ANSWERED.

HOW DO ITALIANS EAT BANANAS?

navyeyelasH · 04/04/2010 23:25

count your lucky stars it wasn't a pomegranate

FalafelAtYourFeet · 04/04/2010 23:26

I will not rest until I know the answer to the italian question. You have piqued my interest

giraffesCANdriveAcar · 04/04/2010 23:53

I am absolutely facinated to know what has possibly been deleted on a thread about oranges - my sick brain is working over time.

I was going to suggest putting "difficult" fruit on some sort of fruit naughty step until it modified its behaviour.

charmander · 05/04/2010 02:48

Well now I need to know 2 things
How do Italians eat their bananas?
What on earth was deleted and why?

We have a tangerine tree in our garden, the fruit are green outside but taste fine. We also have a kiwi fruit tree with ripe kiwis that are 2cm long. Taste horrible though. Guava tree is similar, although they taste quite good.

MaMight · 05/04/2010 09:14

Googling "how do Italians eat bananas" brings up this thread.

What on earth was deleted?

muminthemiddle · 05/04/2010 09:30

Perhaps you would prefer it if they sent hopme a tub of smarties.

TotalChaos · 05/04/2010 10:07

I think TinaEnglish was part of the CUK troll invasion last week, so possibly all his posts were deleted?

Must admit, yanbu, I also struggle with oranges, usually buy clementines or satsumas instead, as they taste nicer too.

Rosa · 05/04/2010 10:34

Reply- Same way as The English DH has just eaten one....( And he threw the skin in the bin)

SpawnChorus · 05/04/2010 10:39

Aha! This has given me an opportunity to rant about an orange-related incident at playgroup (I've been waiting at least two weeks for this).

We bring our own snacks to playgroup for everyone to share. The other day I brought oranges and cut them in to quarters, hockey-game stylee. My kids love them this way.

I plonked them on the table, and another mother beetled over, whisked them away and started to feverishly (and rather angrily) cut the orange segments away from the skin. I boggled quietly for a few minutes, and casually said, "Oh, my kids really like it with the skin on." She chuntered at me and continued hacking at my oranges for about 15 minutes. Obviously by the time she'd finished all the kids had lost interest and and buggered off.

AIBU to think it's bad form to mess with another person's fruit?
