to have freed the trapped squirrel?

Next door have setup a trap/cage on their back fence. This afternoon they caught a big old squirrel, who was going absolutly mad - (very distressed and distressing) squeaking, biting etc and so was his mate. The neighbours were out, so I climbed over our fence and used 2 sticks to free him. He ran away but I was worried he was going to attack. My 3 kids think I'm a hero but dh thinks neighbours will know I did it. I don't care

OP posts:

It seems that for once I'm not in the minority. I have this mental (and I mean this in every sense of the word) image of a host of MN-ers in court defending their decision to free trapped squirrels!

thumbwitch · 29/03/2010 00:35

You could always phone the RSPCA to see if those traps are acceptable in terms of animal suffering.

However, if you sic the RSPCA onto your neighbour, they might get back at you re. releasing the squirrel, which is indeed illegal.

Not sure I would like my DS to see an animal get drowned at a young age but I appreciate that in farming families it would have been an accepted part of life to know that some animals have to die and that young children would not have been shielded from it. If DH catches a fish with DS watching, he kills it and guts it in front of him - I know that's for food but can't really work out the difference in my feelings about it.

I certainly don't want DS to see any animal suffer unnecessarily though so in that respect I think the OP was NU to release the squirrel.

We are banning the little buggers, daeth to them all they are rapacious vermin (like the Tory Party" Ohan Valhalla another measured and sensible response from our ALF activist or is it SHAC these days WE ARE BANNING YOU TOO, seding you the remains of the squirrel pie Rollo so kindly baked it has a soupcon od sundried tomato in the middle

Vallhala · 29/03/2010 00:50

Not a member of SHAC, Never, though a proud supporter of their beliefs. I don't believe that I have ever said that I'm an ALF activist either.

thumbwitch · 29/03/2010 00:50

Are you still up, NCANATP?

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 29/03/2010 00:52

Oh and to all the poor iccle squirrel lovers on this thread, you lot can have them all when we have banned them, keep them in YOUR lofts perhaps, that should do us a favour. Oh and where do you stand on cockroaches and humane traps? >

thumbwitch · 29/03/2010 00:55

standing on cockroaches, not usually a good plan as apparently they release all their eggs if you do that. Gas/poison is the only way to go with cockroaches.
I hate that the film Wall-E tried to make them friendly little critturs, although I Got that they were the only things who could survive in that environment.

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 29/03/2010 00:56

Well I apologise Val but seriously Lib Dems and Ukip can you recommend something humane?

Vallhala · 29/03/2010 01:00

No need for apology Never, but I'm curious as to whether you are requesting that the LibDems and UKip recommend something humane for the squirrels or whether you require a humane means of disposal for the two political parties!

I can comment on the first but have no idea whatsoever as to how to get rid of the second!

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 29/03/2010 01:20

Well my boss has asked me to brainstorm so I thought Mnet was the perfect forum, he does regard both as vermin and he is getting rather desperate! He has suggested anthrax and another time he told me to take 20 quid out of petty cash and nip down to FocusDoItAll and buy a flame thrower, the absolute cheek of the man! He will be asking me to buy his dw's Tena Lady next

Vallhala · 29/03/2010 01:26

Would love to know who your boss is and/or what you do for a living Never!

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 29/03/2010 01:34

Well Valhalla you might recognise me if you watched Britain's Got Talent I got into the first round last year, also if you love ideal World the homeshopping channel I was on it for one day last week on the Create and Craft show with the shapely > Carole. Youmight recognise my photo if you ck=lick on my profile

Vallhala · 29/03/2010 01:36

Beggar! I'm sure I would if I ever watched TV, Never, but I don't. Too busy MN-ing working.

But well done you, that takes some courage and spirit!

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 29/03/2010 01:45

Well big kisses back at you Val you must pop round for a sherry some time I would love you to meet Rollo. He can make a damn fine lemon drizzle cake

fruitloafrocks · 29/03/2010 16:50

Shame to let it go, their tails make great tickle sticks.

meltedmarsbars · 29/03/2010 16:57

You stupid idiot!"!!!! YABVVVVVU!!

Like previous posters, we have had to deal with squirrels chewing their way through our loft. Unfortunately live cage-trapping is the only way to catch them securely, and then you have to kill them.

What you have done is teach a squirrel not to go near a cage trap. You have not dealt with the problem it was possibly creating in your neighbour's loft.

Unfortunately that pest will be almost impossible to catch now, so the only option left for your neighbours is to poison it.

I am very grateful you are not my neighbour.

Sn0wflake · 29/03/2010 19:16

I'm on the squirrels side. Hero in my book.

darkandstormy · 29/03/2010 19:38

does your neighbour get her/his milk delivered, well then i would inject it with arsenic they deserve it the twats, you did the right thing without any doubt.

oldenglishspangles · 29/03/2010 19:38

www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcpn004.pdf/$file/fcpn004.pdf

We have a few around here. Not sure I would trap them but I would not object if the council wanted to cull them.

LetThereBeRock · 29/03/2010 19:40

I think that's a slight overreaction DarkandStormy.

darkandstormy · 29/03/2010 20:09

fernie stick the same arsenic in your mil tea, because she seems like a real nice lady.

upahill · 29/03/2010 20:19

I'm with meltedmarsbars on this one I'm afraid.

Oh yes they may well look cute but they are indeed vermin. Like another poster said once they get into the actic space they create havoc.
We have had them in our atic. Let's hope you never rue the day you set the damm pest free.

seashore · 29/03/2010 20:19

That's just horrible, poor squirrel mate watching on, horrible, horrible, horrible. Well done for coming to their aid.

Course poor old red squirrels but you're probably in a city well away from their populations.

It's not fair to your kids either to see such a thing.

upahill · 29/03/2010 20:50

I'm sure you would all be saying poor squirel after it had crapped all over your actic, chewed through bags and cards that you had saved for sentimental reasons, gnawled up your insulation etc etc.

Try bloody living with it before you come out with the arghs poor squirel.

The bastards!!!

darkandstormy · 29/03/2010 20:56

upahill I still would not want it dead tbh, just out of my space.
