Hair Dye?????

Just a quick poll as really short on time.

Am I being unreasonable to dye my hair with a home dye without doing the skin test for bad reactions. Going on hols on Monday but can'tbe bothered with the test. Not dyed my hair for over 9 years and never did the test then anyway. Do you think it's risky considering it could ruin the holiday - does anyone do these tests???????

i have never done a test and I used to do my hair at home a lot when I was young/er .However my friend had the most hideous reaction to the ingredient in black dye that most commonly causes probs (forget what it is called) and so I think I might test if I was using a darkish colour.

scanty · 27/03/2010 21:43

well it is a non permanent chestnut brown so quite dark.

Think you should do the test. I had a reaction to one brand of hair dye, although other brands have been fine, so you never know. You could be really ill if you had a bad reaction.

jasper · 27/03/2010 22:02

I would not bother with the test

Kaloki · 27/03/2010 22:06

I have to say I never bother with the test, never have done.

I think the chances of a reaction are pretty low, purely because I've never known anyone to have a bad reaction, and all of my friends dye their hair regularly.

However, if it does go wrong, please promise you wont go to the press complaining about it being the fault of the manufacturer like some nutters do!

runnybottom · 27/03/2010 22:08

Do the quick test...mix it and dab a bit on your wrist, if you are going to react you will most likely react quite quickly to that, within 10 mins or so.

Unless you mean test as in the colour, in which case I don't know!

internationalyouday · 27/03/2010 22:09

i would do the test tonight and dye in the morning, you will react withing the first few hours of putting it on if your going to react.

Im a hairdresser and i test everyone that i colour even if they have been coming to me for the last 5 years regurlay, you can just suddenly developed a reaction, use it one time and be fine the next react.

home dyes are hideous for your hair and dont reccommend them at all, if you were to ever go into a salon to have it dyes, it can cause so many problems. i have seen hair disintergrate when strand testing home dyed hair

beammeupscotty · 27/03/2010 22:33

You would be mad not to. I used to work in a&e and saw some very severe reactions to hair dye. People can be scarred and have anaphalactic reactions

scanty · 27/03/2010 23:07

thanks all! Might think twice, though pre children and not having a big event coming up I probably wouldn't have thought twice. The thought of possibly ruining the kids holiday (i'm flying alone with them long haul) is too much too risk. Know yhe odds arewith me but wouldn't forgive myself if I loused it all up.

My friend has just had an awful reaction to a dye she uses regularly and I have recently developed a nasty allergy to seafood when previously I ate loads.

maxpower · 27/03/2010 23:17

I've never done one and I've dyed my hair for years and used different dyes.

thederkinsdame · 27/03/2010 23:34

Permanent dyes (esp dark colours) often contain PPDs. Lots of people are allergic to them, so yes do the test. Especially if you have ever had a henna tattoo, as these contain PPDs and can make you sensitive to dyes

ravenAK · 27/03/2010 23:39

Well, I've been home-dyeing my hair jet black for 25 years, never done a test & never had it all fall out. & I'm allergic to loads of stuff otherwise!

You just can't predict, with allergies - plural of anecdote not data & all that. Probably worth at least doing a quick test as runnybottom suggests?

scanty · 28/03/2010 00:26

I did have a dodgy temp tatoo scratched on my arm in Turkey about 14 yrs ago (I know, I know) and don't even know if it was henna but my arm reacted badly, scabbed and thought I might me scarred for life.
