to keep the Easter eggs for Easter?

Right, birthdays, Christmas, Easter etc - any presents given in advance get hidden away until the occasion. Not totally inflexible, exceptions, wd be family/friend get togethers to celebrate the occasion (Christmas party on Christmas Eve, etc). However, mil was most put out last week that when she said could she give the dcs their eggs, I said no and put them on the top of the cupboard for Easter Sunday. (Obv, I will tell the dcs who they are from). I just like keeping days special, and the excitement of having everything to open at once. But, what do you lot do?

My mam used to keep ours on top of the cupboard too, we weren't allowed them until Easter Sunday.

We've got 3 already waiting for Easter Sunday and the biggest box of Thorntons in the world!. They have been given to us and as I'm on a strict diet ( lighter life, going well!) everyone will have to wait!

elmofan · 27/03/2010 12:53

my two dc's have already eaten the eggs my cousin has given them , we generally let them have any presents given in advance as they know the Easter bunny is still going to give them several eggs each & a DVD each so have that to look forward to .

grumpypants · 27/03/2010 12:54

good luck blowbroth - what happens when you take the lid off the thorntons!

They stay hidden away til Easter. Then I have to try to forget they're there or they will be eaten by me!!!

blowbroth · 27/03/2010 13:32

Thanks grumpy pants! It's not too bad and I'm sure the rest of the family will soon polish them off! I have lost 23 pounds in nearly 2 weeks now so feeling quite motivated!

Meglet · 27/03/2010 13:39

yanbu. Keep them for the day.

5Foot5 · 27/03/2010 18:25

YANBU. Although we never hide the eggs. If someone gives an egg then DD knows about it straightaway but they are never eaten until Easter Sunday.

My Mum always did it like that for me too.

Mind you, DDs "Easter egg" from us this year was an Easter egg box with the egg taken out and the New Moon DVD in its places so I might let her watch it before Easter Sunday!

grumpypants · 28/03/2010 10:11

[5foot5] - my dd wd be v envious!

Easter Eggs get eaten when they are given here. That way no one gets sick from eating six eggs in one go! I've just had half a malteser one with a cup of coffee and it was deeeelish

grumpypants · 28/03/2010 15:10

we have them lingering for ages afterwards - saves me buying chocolate. Plus, the smallest ones are growing out of dairy/lactose allergies so i like to be in total control of the chocolate. [remembering potential disaster over christening emoticon]

When my daughter was young we kept all the eggs till Easter Sunday (she knew she had eggs and who gave her them but wasnt allowed to eat them) Now that she is older she gets to eat them as they are given

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 28/03/2010 16:01

Iwould ban Easter Eggs and Easter itself come to think of it! I would also like to ban chocolate too.

PoppyC · 28/03/2010 16:01

I think it's right for you to keep your eggs for Easter Sunday if that's what you want, but your MIL was probably looking forward to seeing them enjoy her present, esp. if you're not spending easter day together.

IMO it might be a good excuse to let kids eat eggs from family when they are given them to avoid huge gorges on choc at easter!

Neverchuckanokiaatthepm · 28/03/2010 16:09

I WOULD IMPOSE A BAN ON ALL EGGS EASTER OR OTHERWISE!

piscesmoon · 28/03/2010 16:10

I thought that delayed gratification was a sign of emotional intelligence (the one sweet now or 2 later test) therefore you are helping your DC if you keep it until Easter.
Easter Sunday isn't special if you start eating eggs when you get them.

Bigpants1 · 28/03/2010 16:53

Did your MIL want to just give your dcs their eggs and see their excitement and then help you put them away, or was she wanting your dcs to eat them while she was visiting? Perhaps she just wanted to share their excitement if she wont be seeing them at Easter?

grumpypants · 28/03/2010 20:56

Thank you Pisces [preen emoticon!] Bigpants - yes, think she wanted to see them enjoy them, but tbh if she had bought some choc buttons i'd have said yes, after dinner, but it is soooo early to be opening date specific presents (get me).

I keep dd's easter eggs hidden and the easter bunny brings them at easter! And we have an egg hunt too!

I am an atheist but any excuse to have a family tradition to be honest! I get as excited (okay, more excited) as my dd (5)!

missmoopy · 28/03/2010 21:15

She doesn't get to eat them all in one go though!

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 28/03/2010 21:16

23lbs in two weeks? WTF?

missmoopy · 28/03/2010 21:22

blowbroth, have you had the ebola virus???

ozmetric · 28/03/2010 22:01

YANBU to keep them for the day.
