Shoud I call the police?

A man drove into the courtyard of our little estate this morning, parked up and stayed in his car. This was about 7.15am. I was putting my "face on" by the window and could see him take some photos of the properties in the corner of the courtyard then he spent a lot of time on the phone. I left to take my DS to school at 8.25am and he was still there.

Got back at 11.00am after shopping and he had gone. However he reappeared about 12.15pm, parked in the same place and has been there ever since, on the phone and reading.

I feel like I want to ask him wtf he is doing but it's really quiet here and hardly anyone about during the day. He might be some kind of nutter. Then again he could be totally innocent and it's not against the law to sit in your car. But it's not on a road - but in a quiet courtyard.

I've taken down his vehicle reg (God , I sound like Miss Marple!)

He must be waiting or watching out for something or someone. I wish my DH was here coz he'd be out there like a shot but I feel a bit vunerable on my own and a bit of a busy body phoning the police. He's obviously not bothered coz some cars have come and gone and he is blazenly sitting there. Thought I could see how long he stays coz surely he's gonna want a pee at some point (been here at least three hours) and then see if he comes back tomorrow and if he does call the police. What do you think?

He's probably waiting to 'serve' someone with papers or is a bailiff.

Either way he's doing nothing illegal and is being blatant so you've got nothing to worry about.

Hmm. Maybe if he's still there next time you go out you could ask him if you could help him, (most courteously!). I understand your unease, although I doubt he's casing any joints as he is very visible. But I too would have taken down the number so you have a fellow suspicious type here!

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 26/03/2010 15:30

Call the police, but on the local number. 'Worst' that will happen is they check the person out, their reasons and move them on/let them stay. OR it could be something worse. No point asking him because if it's sinister he's hardly gonna say "O, I am here because I am just about to kidnap that kid who lives in that house'" or something.

FiaGrace · 26/03/2010 15:31

I would agree with Laurie, he's a Bailiff. If he is, he will carry a certificate which you could ask to see??

Pikelit · 26/03/2010 15:40

If you want to know what he is doing, go out and ask. He probably won't say "Sizing things up ready to burgle all your houses", or "I'm a confirmed paedophile waiting for a kid to come along". But if he has a legitimate reason for being where he is he should have no problem telling you what it is. If the conversation leaves you even more concerned then phone the police.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 26/03/2010 15:46

He sounds as if he's more then likely from the benefits agency investigating someone for benefit fraud. I would call the police to be on the safe side though.

NeedCoffee · 26/03/2010 15:48

Maybe he's hoping to buy a house round there and seeing what it is like in the day time.
Maybe he is from social and watching someone.
Maybe he's doing something for insurance/building work etc.
Go and ask him, I'm intrigued!

sb6699 · 26/03/2010 15:53

My guess is that he is a bailliff waiting for someone to come home from work in their car so he can repossess it.

I too am intrigued!

Tiredmumno1 · 26/03/2010 15:53

Me too. Run.....

Tiredmumno1 · 26/03/2010 15:55

Although i dont think bailiffs waste nearly an entire day outside someones house, doesnt sound right, he would have buggered off by now to slap more charges on.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 26/03/2010 15:57

It'll be someone from the benefits agency

DJC1 · 26/03/2010 15:57

Well I was just plucking up the courage to go out when I heard voices and a couple who live a few doors away were talking to him. Couldn't hear what they were saying (damn!) but there was a lot of pointing at an empty apartment for about ten minutes.

Think maybe he was a benefit agency person or bailiff. There used to be a young lad there but only for a short time and he left quite suddenly. Blimey I need to get out more!

He could be police himself? It could be the world's least covert surveillance operation? OR - he wants the people he's watching to know he's watching. Maybe it's part of the police's new "Messing with your head" strategy.

LilRedWG · 26/03/2010 16:00

We had baliffs knocking out door asking if we knew wehre the next door neighbours had disapearred to and giving us a phone number to call if they reappeared.
