to think that some OAPs can be just plain rude to young(er) people?

In Argos today, there was a queue. I needed to ask a question about something, so I got in the line and waited until a till became free. I had seen a lady waiting by the area which you pick things up from, and she was saying something about having to pay for another item. She then walked straight past me in the queue and just as she did that, the till became free. She looked right at me waiting with DS on his reins and carried on to the till.

I was very surprised as she'd obv seen me but chose to jump me in the queue. I left after that because I was so exasperated that I couldn't trust myself not to say something.

I get this all the time from older people, yes, they deserve respect and care but they sometimes think they deserve to be treated differently just because they are old.

I will probably think differently when I am older, but at least I'll still have my manners!

I would have said something. Yanbu at all.

Tiredmumno1 · 25/03/2010 18:28

Grr i hate queue jumpers, that happened to me recently, and yes it was also an oap, but luckily i didnt have to say anything, the cashier noticed and told her i was first, you should have seen her face lol.

groundhogs · 25/03/2010 18:29

The words 'Excuse Me' are designed for such a purpose.... Closely followed by I think you'll find I was next.

I think that older people have less excuse for lack of manners actually!

overmydeadbody · 25/03/2010 18:31

Regardless of age, some people are just rude, the OAP you encountered was probably rude her ehole life.

You should have said something, YABU not to have. People only get away qwith things like queue jumping if no one challenges them.

TheFallenMadonna · 25/03/2010 18:32

Why are you assuming this has anything to do with her age and sense of entitlement?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 25/03/2010 18:35

I was in the supermarket with ds on Saturday, there were no small trolleys, only really huge ones (I'm only 5 foot 2 so can't reach inside ) so we waited for one to come back. We were there for 5 minutes and a old woman came and stood with us, then someone brought a small trolley back and asked if anyone was waiting for one, I said we were and the old lady took it right away without even acknowledging that we were waiting We were there for another 20 minutes before another one turned up!

There was an old lady who used to join the queue for the bus back from ds's old school, she always used to push in, it didn't matter how long people had been waiting

Eve4Walle · 25/03/2010 18:35

I wasn't really. Some people are very rude regardless of age. It seems to me that lately, all the really rude people have been much older than me. It's not a rant about old people though, I have many lovely old people in my life who I care for deeply and respect immensely.

Im alot older than you! but an OAP did that to me in M&S, I went for the knee caps and told her in no uncertain terms never to do that to me again..I dont hold with all this " Im an OAP" bit,oh, and she shoved me in the back when i didnt move quickly enough, but the assisant was changning the till roll, you should have sadi something. Anoterh thing, not saying thankyou when you hold the dorr open for them,I say it for them in a loud voice, really pissed me off when my kids did it and they just sailed thru.so a few times, i let the door swing in their face.

ToccataAndFudge · 25/03/2010 18:46

Belle - I'm 5ft and can reach inside the big trolleys

I actually had a nice incident with an OAP today (had forgotten about it as I was so stressed about the rest of the trip to town).

At Morrisons checkout, at the total end of my tether, I didn't really feel up to going out, DS3 had been a nightmare in town, we'd been rained on, there's probably a thread someone on MN about "the horrible woman shouting at her DS in pushchair to "STOP WHINING"......you get the picture).

Anyhow, standing there about to completely fall to pieces and this old man behind me in the queue suddenly piped up (just after I'd been rather harsh with DS3 again)

"your children" (I swear he then paused for about 10 minutes) "have the most wonderful heads of hair"

I'm with you Frosty. But like I said, I'm not ageist in general. Just had a bad day I suppose and get fed up of trying to be nice and non-judgy to people who have no manners.

toccata lol , bet that was a very uncomfortable silence while you waited for him to finish that sentence
bella i am also 5ft 2" & use the big trolleys .

ToccataAndFudge · 25/03/2010 19:17

it probably wasn't that long a silence, but it felt like eternit................it was long enough for my blood to start boiling (although admittedly right now that doesn't take long)
