To expect a Tesco 'Finest' prawn salad not be bloody off??

mumofaboy · 24/03/2010 19:53

Thought I'd treat myself today, bought a Tesco Finest prawn thai salad thing on the way to work. Kept it in the fridge all morning and when I got it out for lunch and opened it up the bloody thing ponged to high heaven.

Have complained to Tesco so hopefully they'll send me my money back. As it was I had to spend out again on lunch from the canteen at work. That'll learn me for treating myself. .

Finest ain't so fine, obviously.....

lol that'll learn you from buying thiings from Tesco more like!

bluejeans · 24/03/2010 19:56

At least you didn't eat it! They should refund double the difference! I had a horrible M&S microwave meal tonight which wasn't cheap so share your pain!

mumofaboy · 24/03/2010 20:19

The worst thing was that I've got a bad head cold ATM so can't smell anything - it was only after I'd eaten one I thought it seemed a bit rank so got my colleague to smell it as well.

Bleurgh.

I had a similar experience with Tesco recently when a small bag of fruit I bought my daughter for her snack turned out to be rotten with a bug in it. It was 5 days out of date, I didn't check when I bought it because I just assumed stuff for immediate consumption would be OK. We went to the shop the next day and found more out of date stuff. Complained to the Environmental Health Officer who went round there and I also complained to the central Tesco customer services. Got a £5 gift card as "compensation".

Schulte · 24/03/2010 20:38

Sorry but YABU, I mean what do you expect from Tesco? Go shopping somewhere that sells real food. Hope it didn't make you feel ill.

mumofaboy · 24/03/2010 20:41

No I'm ok. But are you really suggesting IABU for expecting food from Tesco to at least be edible???

I once bought a 'finest' cottage pie for myself when dh was away.I will just say that it came up quicker than it went down-never again.

bluejeans · 24/03/2010 20:48

Um...what's wrong with Tesco, Schulte? Seriously...? We have Asda and Morrisons near us so going to Tesco is a treat to me we must live in different worlds

usualsuspect · 24/03/2010 20:49

Only waitrose is good enough for MN ..surely everyone knows that

thisisyesterday · 24/03/2010 20:53

aside from the ethical issues I have with Tesco, we found when we used to shop there that more often than not any meat/veg/fruit was near the end of its life
there was always manky meat out on display.

in fact iirc they were given a huge fine a few years ago for selling bad meat. regularly.

if I buy fruit/veg from sainsburys or waitrose it lasts nearly the whole week. buy from tesco and it's manky within a couple of days

frankly i prefer morrisons

Schulte · 24/03/2010 20:53

I think pretty much everything from Tesco tastes of plastic rather than food. I avoid the place at all costs. Also they want to rule the world and I hate how they take over every little corner shop. I'd much rather shop in the local fruit&veg shop or on the market, better quality at better prices. And I would rather not buy meat or fish in Tesco, I'd have a vegetarian meal if Tesco is the only supermarket around. But then I have a massive choice of supermarkets where I am so I realise it's difficult in other areas.

Pikelit · 24/03/2010 20:58

Unfortunately, yes. Before Waitrose arrived in town I'd drive some distance to avoid the only supermarket, a Tesco store, not least because they seemed unable to store perishable stuff in a way that meant hadn't perished while still well in date.

Pikelit · 24/03/2010 21:00

Sorry, that last message should have started "Unfortunately, yes. YABU to expect food from Tesco to be edible"

usualsuspect · 24/03/2010 21:02

I've never had a problem with tesco .. hate supermarket snobbery ...my dd works there the discount comes in handy

TrillianAstra · 24/03/2010 21:07

'Finest' doesn't make a difference, you should expect Tesco Value to be fresh too.

Pikelit · 24/03/2010 21:09

I'm not a supermarket snob. I just find the whole Tesco experience - in our local store - reliably unrewarding and strangely stressful. I felt similarly despite having ds1's discount during the time he worked there while he saved up to go travelling.

But having said the above, why should I justify the use of Waitrose? I think their food is better and if that's snobbery, I don't, with respect, give a fuck.

usualsuspect · 24/03/2010 21:12

I prefer Asda anyway ...

oldraver · 24/03/2010 21:49

BlueJeans I went to eat an M+S ready meal I bought last night and it was out of date . I didnt look at the date as it wasnt reduced so I expected it to be well in date

mumofaboy · 24/03/2010 21:57

Trillian - I said exactly that to my colleague, but you'd think they'd make more of an effort with the Finest range - it's the least they can offer, no?

I bought a prawn salad from Tesco the other day (not Finest) and it was only when I finished it I realised there was not a single prawn in it - they had forgotten to put them in. Never mind, I only like it for the Marie Rose sauce really...

thisisyesterday · 25/03/2010 12:46

i am not a supermarket snob, i just prefer to buy food that is fresh!
I also object to the "tescopoly" effect. Tesco will build stores anywhere and everywhere with blatant disregard for local businesses. There have now been several big campaigns to stop Tesco building in certain places, some of which have been successful.

I will happily shop pretty much anywhere, my next nearest supermarket is an Asda, but I don't shop there because I tend to buy organic and they never have much organic food, so i go to sainsburys.

but as pikelet says, why should we justify shopping elsewhere???

LeSingeEstDansLarbre · 25/03/2010 12:51

we've just had a tesco opened up here, dh bought a lasagne from there, from the finest range. it really was utterly disgusting, the meat was all that springly, chewy, cheapo way. god only knows what their value lasagne tastes like. (serves him right, of course, he should have cooked something).

ellesapelle · 25/03/2010 14:33

I bought some onions from Tesco the other day. I went to cut into one and it just disintegrated in my hand it was so soft . I also bought some Finest mince which turned out to be brown inside and smelled terrible despite having days left until it went off. I don't seem to have the same problem with Sainsbury's or Asda.

PeedOffWithNits · 25/03/2010 14:37

last weeks delivery from asda contained 12 fromage frais with a life of 1 day left on them. did they really think we would eat all of those in one day - useless! problem was i did not even look at the date till 3 days later....at least noone got ill
