to expect my ds age 4 to pick up his own bloody toys while i'm cooking tea ? he wants to play with something else but wants me to help pick up the toys he has spread all over the living room floor, i have said no i'm busy and he has screamed, i told him i would put them in a box and put them in the garage if i had to do it, he said he doesn't want them any more argggggghhhhhhhh !!! he knows i mean it as last week he had his lego taken off him for the same reason and he still hasn't got that back. he doesn't seem to care. i'm just not sure what to do, i know he is very tired (been waking at 4.30 the last few days) and i'm tired and grumpy too and really i'm in no mood to battle this one out. he's probably forgotten all about it now as he's happily playing with the said toys, should i let it go and help him pick them up before bed time (as tea is done and dusted now) or should i risk a screaming match where i know he'll dig his heels in and i'll end up picking the lot up and he'll lose the flippin toys for a week.

sorry for the long rant and thanks for reading if you have got this far

Sadly, I think you are. At this age, I had the same battles as you, but if he's tired, the best I thing you can hope for is for him to help you.

ocdgirl · 24/03/2010 18:22

thankyou that's what i was thinking but i'm pretty tired and hormonal so can't trust myself at the mo

Agree with Screaming - even my 9 year old sometimes needs this sort of guidance if the mess he's made is overwhelming (involving Lego, cars, trains, book etc etc)

peace and quiet has resumed, toys tidied away no bother (we did it together) and now ds is having half an hour (ish) tv time before bed

My DS (nearly 4) needs guidance, if I say clear up your trains, he protests, loudly but if I say , pick up the blue train, then the read one, he co-operates...

Another trick I use is to say, whatever you do, don't pick up those trains and tidy them away, he grins and says...I'm going to tidy them up...

Kids eh?
