to be a little annoyed at having to conjure up a pair of rugby shorts for tomorrow?

Ds2 told us yesterday that he'd signed up for a rugby tournament at school, and we'd have to sign a consent form that he'd get today - which is not a problem - until he comes home from school, about 20 minutes ago, and informs me that the school can't provide the kit (which they had apparently said they would) and so he needs a pair of rugby shorts for tomorrow!

I am going to have to make a special trip either to the nearest shopping mall, or to Glasgow, and I am NOT impressed - I can think of far better ways to spend the afternoon, and I don't think that it's reasonable to expect parents to produce kit at such short notice.

Or am I being a grumpy old moo who should just get in the car and go in search of a sports equipment shop?

Doesn't he have PE shorts he can wear?
If they are very specific shorts YANBU, if he has school PE shorts send him in those.

amber1979 · 23/03/2010 16:22

Unless they are specifying a specific colour, rugby can be played in any pair of shorts that can be reasonably expected to stay on.

According to my DP (who played for the county at one point a gum shield is a good idea though.

Sigh!! I'm used to these last minute requests O don't bother getting worked up now.

I know excatly what you mean though.

I often get a text once my lad is on the bus saying 'Mum it's afterschool PE tonight can you......'

notsoteenagemum · 23/03/2010 16:23

YANBU dd's school is forever asking for things at a minutes notice, a red T-shirt for a netball tournament, white knee socks for choral group, a sari for Indian dancing and 32 cakes for a child who was moving back to Germany all came with an evenings notice.

What makes shorts into rugby shorts?

Unfortunately they can wear any shorts or tracksuit bottoms for PE at the dses school, and ds2's been wearing trackies - he doesn't have a pair of shorts that fit.

I'm assuming they are supposed to be heavy cotton white shorts, but I think amber's right, and any white shorts will do - which might make procurement a bit easier.

I've never had to produce a sari at no notice - that would definitely stump me!

I've had a search on the net, and there's a retail park only a few miles away where there's a JJB sports, so I guess that's where we are headed when he gets back from his paper round. It'll definitely be macaroni cheese for supper tonight though - nothing complicated or time consuming.

at Rubysreturn.

SDTG it ended up being more like a colourful Toga if I'm honest.

ruggermum · 23/03/2010 16:36

How old is DS2? I'm guessing that he is young so they might be doing touch or tag rugby so 'proper' rugby shorts aren't a necessity.
Hope he enjoys his tournament!

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 23/03/2010 16:37

That's a good point, rubysreturn - in fact I should have known that because it happened to my dad when he was playing rugby for his college!

JJB usually carry rugby stuff, it might even be on sale cos 6 nations is finished

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 23/03/2010 18:00

Thanks Macdog - the crossed fingers must have worked, because not only did they have rugby shorts in the right size and the right colour, but they were half price too!!!

How fantastic!! It's deffo your lucky day

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/03/2010 10:46

Well - the boy managed to remember to take the rugby shorts to school with him, but I had to chauffeur his gumguard in before the bus left for the rugby tournament. This would happen on the one school morning when I'd decided to stay in bed because I'd slept badly and was feeling appalling - so I had to wake up from a deep sleep, get dressed and get to school in under 15 minutes.

GRrrrrrrrrrr.....

Still - it is bloomin' cold and raining here, so he'll get his comeuppance. Of course, if I were a really good mother, I'd be on the touchline, cheering him on.

Did they win?

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 24/03/2010 19:40

Errr ..... no. They lost all but two matches, drew one and won one. But he had a good time, I think - and he put his own dirty kit into the washing machine! I nearly fainted.

As long as he's happy!

And congratulations on the house-training finally kicking in
