I am SO frustrated on her behalf.

Why don't you lazy tikes read through threads before jumping in to judge?

OP posts:

Isn't there a childcare element to tax credits? If she's not working or they don't use paid childcare, their entitlement will be much less than if they're both working and so need childare.

BetsyLittleson · 23/03/2010 15:34

We have 4 children, one under 1 and get £450 a month on a £24k wage so she's either been overpaid a ridiculously large amount or he earns a hell of a lot more than we do.

LadyBiscuit · 23/03/2010 15:35

That £50/months assumes the OP is not working

Original Thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/933548-to-expect-the-council-to-house-us-even-though-DH

For those who didn't read her thread, or cannot make sense of it, as I understand it The point of her thread is actually the fact the landlord wants them out and property back. And has served an eviction notice in Nov. OP has spent time going into council repeatedly about needing a council house since then, so she didn't just sit about ignoring it all, as far as I can see...

They were declared bankrupt a year ago and now have an appalling credit rating and therefore cannot rent again. They do know anyone to be a guarantor for them either.

So that's why they haven't found anywhere else and need to be re-homed by council. As no one will rent to them with dire credit rating.

Does that about sum it up? So I find it bizarre how everyone is trying to work out in their head what they're earning re: tax credits, as the fact is she is going to be homeless and needs somewhere to live regardless of what they earn...

teaandcakeplease · 23/03/2010 16:35
  • do NOT know anyone
Wineonafridaynight · 23/03/2010 19:20

Teaandcupcakes I totally agree! The whole thread seemed to be misunderstood from the beginning with people asking questions which were answered in the ops first post! It was driving me mad - kept reading though!!!

skihorse · 23/03/2010 19:32

OP - YANBU.

But then this is mn, never let the facts get in the way of a good bitchfest.

JackBauer · 23/03/2010 19:34

DILLIGAF?

NextDirectory · 23/03/2010 19:35

So who exactly is on the 55k ? She is or he is?

Portofino · 23/03/2010 19:42

And does it really matter?

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 23/03/2010 19:46

Yes it matters.

JollyPirate · 23/03/2010 19:51

I was on 34k on a full time wage and I got £45 in tax credits a month so they could well be on much less than £50k. Either that or the tax credit people were underpaying me.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/03/2010 19:54

does anyone realise that there is working tax credit and family tax credit? and you the amount you get depends on how much child care you pay and whether or not you or your children are in receipt of things like disability living allowance?

so people really shouldnt jump to ridiculous conclusions about how much a person earns based on their tax credit award.

do some people really have nothing better to do?

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 23/03/2010 20:42

Does it really matter what they earn?

If private landlords refuse to rent to them, it doesn't matter if they're earning a million a month, they won't get a private let because letting agents say they won't rent to them.

I assume she can't afford to pay 6 months rent up front. or to put down a deposit on a house and get a mortgage since her credit is fucked.

If she is being evicted because current landlord wants the property back, and letting agents are saying they will not rent to her, what is she supposed to do but go to the council for help?

Portofino · 23/03/2010 20:49

I had the impression that the "point" was how far or not the OP had tried to help herself, or whether she just wanted to throw herself on the mercy of the housing dept. I personally find it hard to believe that no-one will rent her property when there is income coming in. She is certainly not in need in the way that some posters are!

I would almost hazard a bet that at the point that the council suggest putting them all in a crappy b&b, the family's wherewithal will increase exponentially!

ToccataAndFudge · 23/03/2010 20:52

porto it is much much harder to find somewhere to rent if you credit rating is fucked. And if you credit rating is fucked they usually want a guarantor - who usually has to earn something like 3 or 4 times the annual rent of the place you want to live in.

JustMyTwoPenceWorth · 23/03/2010 20:53

When I was trying to find a private let after getting notice on house I was in at the time, nobody would touch us with a bargepole because our credit was shit - even though our bank account showed enough coming in every month to cover the rent. Once credit checked (which they all do) they said no. Having the money to pay the rent seems to not be enough, ime.

ToccataAndFudge · 23/03/2010 20:55

oh and the gurantor will have to be credit checked too, so if they have an good enough income but a fucked credit rating they can still say no to you.

And believe me it's very hard to find someone who is willing to sign a piece of paper that says if you fall behind on your rent they will pay it........

Portofino · 23/03/2010 21:01

I am obviously completely out of touch!

ToccataAndFudge · 23/03/2010 21:07

is shite porto - says I who chose to go into private rented rather than put myself at the mercy of the council.........

expatinscotland · 23/03/2010 21:12

And says I who will be eating beans and drinking water to save up deposit, first month's rent and fees to go back into private (need to pay off debt, which we'll do by year's end, touch wood).

Portofino · 23/03/2010 21:32

OK - I consider my arse kicked. Things have definitely changed since I last rented in the UK!

ToccataAndFudge · 23/03/2010 21:33

sorry porto - didn't mean it to come across like that

Portofino · 23/03/2010 21:37

No - you are right! Though we rent here, and the bank lends you the deposit, (if you have a job of course), it has been more than 10 years since i rented in UK. It never USED to be that difficult, so hands up I should shut up!
