To think monkeys should not be pets?!!

I don't know if anyone else watched the 'My Monkey Baby' programme on more 4 last night, i just happend to come across it and was left crying throughout.
There were a few couples who had choosen to have a baby monkey and raise it as if its their own baby, now one of them was a tragic case where she couldn't have any children at all so turned to Monkeys and she seemed to be less crazy, although im not sure.

The couple that distressed me the most was a young couple, a man who had voulntarily had a vasectomy at 22yrs old, because he never wanted children, and his g/f who by all accounts could have children of her own.
They already had 2 massive dogs, and were adopting a baby girl monkey from a breeder ( this is apparently legal in the US .
They poor baby monkey was only 10 days old, and had been seperated from its mother, after all documents were signed the breeder ( whos house was a bloody tip ) took them into a garage at back where she had quite a few grown monkeys in metal cages, small windows and no indication of greenery or stimulation, the then said new parents paraded the baby monkey infront of the mother and you could literaly see the pain and loss on the mothers face, i know its a monkey, but still!
It made me cry, really sobbing, the humans were just laughing, finding it funny when the mother monkey got aggressive and scratched at the g/f and took the microphone cover.
I really can not believe that this is legal, im all for adotping monkeys for their saftey, if they have been injured to the point they need specialist care, but these monkeys were just deliberatly being snatched away for a 4k profit.
why do people think this is acceptable?
the young couple seemed less than concered with the obvious distress of the mother monkey, and even less with the stress of their new 'baby' at having to live with 2 massive dogs, barking at it all the time!

I saw that and had to stop watching. The people on it were utterly bonkers and completely selfish; 'humanising' those poor monkeys to meet some wierd need of their own.

Horrible

im glad im not the only one, the programme about trophy kids after it was just as bad!

I went to bed very sad last night, had to peak in on my DS just to remind me of the positive in life!

did not see programme, would have been very upset

fernie3 · 22/03/2010 14:06

I saw that and hated the programme too. They are not babies they are monkeys. I dont like monkeys ever since one pinched me so I cant see that they would make great pets let alone children.

midori1999 · 22/03/2010 14:51

I didn't see the programme, but I don't agree with people keeping monkeys, lemurs, meerkats as similar as child substitutes or single pets.

However, I don't see why people can't keep monkeys etc as 'pets' providing they cater for all their needs, both social and otherwise, and realise that they will never be pets in the true sense of the word.

I am hoping to have a group of meerkats at some point, but won't do so until I can keep them outside in an appropriate heated zoo type enclosure properly, so probably not for years.

Seems a bit unhealthy to me for the people involved. Not sure it's worse taking a monkey from its mother than taking a puppy or kitten. Is the difference just because they are people shaped?

darkandstormy · 22/03/2010 14:52

poor monkeys makes me so These people are sad cases of the highest order imo.

MrsGravy · 22/03/2010 14:55

Onagar, I've always assumed puppies and kittens need to stay with their mums for a certain amount of time before you could take them away? The monkeys were supposed to be staying with their mums for something like 10 weeks not 10 days. The mum was really obviously distressed, it was horrible.

LetThereBeRock · 22/03/2010 15:01

Young monkeys would normally remain with and be cared for by the mother for years,in the wild, not just weeks or months.

MuddyMamma · 22/03/2010 15:21

Im all for hand raising any baby animal where nesassery. BUT once the baby is removed, you DO NOT parade the babe infront of mother as she will reconise her child and will become more stressed as they are in the arms of a scary creature.
When a monkeys grow up, they often turn violent. Most monkeys sold as pets are sold to scientists for resurch when they become uncontrolable.

ScaredOfCows · 22/03/2010 16:00

I saw it too, and agree that the part where the baby monkey was taken to see the mother in the cage was awful.

The whole concept of having a small monkey and keeping it as a child substitute is unthinkable - did you see the bit where the older woman said that she would expect the monkey to be able to care for her (the woman) when she was older?

It's the next step on from parading handbag dogs around in party dresses and hoodys.

onebadbaby · 22/03/2010 16:07

Sick!

Southwestwhippet · 22/03/2010 16:52

I saw it too but turned off at the bit where the mother monkey was desperately reaching for her baby because I was crying too much. Had 7wk DD in my arms at the time and just imagining how that mother monkey must feel...

Human beings can be so unbelivably selfish.

junglist1 · 22/03/2010 16:52

I don't mind so much if the monkey is loved and cared for appropriately. Taking a monkey at that age away from mum is disgusting and cruel beyond belief. Animals feel sorrow like humans do

chegirlWILLbeserene · 22/03/2010 16:54

I think I saw this a while ago. Did it have the older couple in it who insisted on taking their monkey into restuarants and getting stroppy when asked to leave?

It was all very odd and horrible and it turned out that this woman had about 7 kids who she 'no longer had contact with'.

I wonder why.
