to think this woman should NOT get pets

am really annoyed by someone on our freecycle group asking for rabbit hutches THREE of them, because she wants to get her 3 oldest DDs rabbits for easter

how sweet - NOT

This woman I have given lots of girls clothes/toys to for her 4 DDs, all under 9, 2 are still in a buggy - one of these is apparently old enough for its own rabbit

she is a single mother with no car so I have delivered stuff to her home. she does not seem to cope very well. I suspect she has a mild degree of learning difficulties - and before I get flamed for making that leap based on 2 meetings, i speak as an ex teacher with several years experience.

sorry to be a judgeypants but she has been asking for something everyday for months - often replacement baby gear and clothes for her girls, but also luxuries such as "I really need a new DVD player to help my 3 yo get to sleep" etc

why oh why does she feel the need to get her kids cute bunnies and why oh why one each??

If she cannot afford the hutches herself what about feeding bedding and vets bills?? let alone transporting bunnies plus kids to the vets should the need arise

i can imagine the bunnies suffering too, thats what makes me and

arggghhh!!!
rant over

Totally agree with you
very ott to get them one each
I would give it a couple of months and then get the RSPCA to have a wee check on them

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 22/03/2010 13:33

I don't think anyone should get pets "for Easter", it's like dogs at Xmas.

MrsPixie · 22/03/2010 13:33

I agree with you but hey what can you do? They will probably get bored after a while and re-home them, bunnies are LOTS of hard work cleaning every day, letting them out to run, good fresh food. Can you talk to her about all the extra work she will be letting herself in for?

darkandstormy · 22/03/2010 13:43

agree with compo re rspca, people should not get animals for presents,Only if they are as parents prepared to udertake 100% of responsibility if and when the kids get bored. Some people need to remember animals are living creatures with needs, not clumps of disposable plasic.Makes me because rspca reckon rabbits are most neglecyed of all pets.

we used to live next door to a woman who sounds very similar to the one in yours OP.
she wasn't horrible but she wasn't all there IYKWIM.
However she got her DD a rabbit called honey for her Birthday and then 2 weeks later went away for an undisclosed amount of time, and left the bowls filled with water and food, but didn't ask anyone to check on the poor thing, it was in the garden and as sneaky children do me and my sister used to go over and play with it. - it wasn't a secure hut - then after 3 weeks of her not coming back and the food had run out we took the rabbit in and looked after it, she came back 4 months later and was furious because we stole her rabbit!
rabbit ended up at the RSPCA as mum didn't want to give it back to her and didn't think it was fair for the little girl to see it in someone elses garden etc.
i would phone RSPCA if it turns out she has got them eventually.

junglist1 · 22/03/2010 13:46

I hope the fact she asked for 3 hutches is a good sign? She could have just crammed them all in one. Hopefully things turn out OK, but agree with what others said about checking things out

PeedOffWithNits · 22/03/2010 13:50

Im just hoping shes not getting different sex rabbits to breed and sell

i know someone who tried this with puppies to get some christmas money, she could not really cope and the puppies cost her money as they did not sell quick enough, she ended up giving some away

why dont people see what work and responsibility and expense goes with a pet.

i think a toy cuddly rabbit would do the job!

i fell out with my brother because he was going to get a kitten, he really isn't capabal at 17, no job ( at college ) and no experience of animals - was never interested before!
I told him straight out that if i thought he wasn't looking after it i would call rspca on him.
he didn't like it, but has since started to take more interest in our mums cats lol.

YANBU

The littlest ones would almost certainly prefer a little bunny toy if she really wants to give them an Easter Bunny. Possibly the older ones too - my 11yr old DD bought herself a really sweet one from HobbyCraft at the weekend.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 22/03/2010 14:28

Agreed, and funnily enough there's someone like this on our freecycle too, I've been to her house, only stood on the doorstep but it stunk of pets, she had loads of dirty looking kids peering out from behind the door and behind them there were cages everywhere, dozens and dozens, and parrots squawking in the background.

She's been on recently asking if anyone is giving away puppies or kittens. Some people just have no sense of self control when it comes to pets. You can only be "the more the merrier" if you genuinely have all the time and money necessary to care for them.
