to want a kettle, tea and coffee in a hotel room that costs £280-400/night?

So, after a particularly difficult time dh & I decided to blow a chunk of our savings on 2 nights away. We went for a luxury hotel - Ickworth House - and it was lovely, but just felt like at every corner you had to pay for extras - no drinks in room, children's meal at breakfast not included (£3), cycle hire £6.50 for 4hrs (which used to be free), etc.

Am I missing something here? Is it assumed you are loaded and therefore don't mind paying £3.10 for a cup of tea in your room? Or have I stayed in too many holiday inn's where they throw it in for free???

Jesus I thought the tea and coffee cost £200-400 a night reading the OP!

YANBU though.

ouryve · 20/03/2010 21:36

At that price, I'd want someone to make me the tea or coffee!!!

SusieCarmichael · 20/03/2010 21:36

what no wine either?! YADNBU!!

expatinscotland · 20/03/2010 21:37

It's not thrown in free, it's factored into the cost of a room.

That's why if I had some spare change, which will be never, I'd rather spend it going on a mini break abroad.

YANBU.

You've been ripped off.

We stayed there 3 years ago after our wedding with the dcs. I assumed no kettle was due to safety reasons with it being a family hotel. Was annoying though.

There were bowls of free apples!

Guadalupe · 20/03/2010 21:40

I don't remember paying for bikes either

bellavita · 20/03/2010 21:40

I totally agree with you.

We stopped in Le Meridien Picadilly a couple of weeks ago. They did have tea and coffee making faciliies, but there was not enough milk, no biscuits and no hot chocolate sachets.... fortunately, we used points for our room, if we would have had to pay for it it was around £400. On checking in, a tray of fruit was sent up to the room and there were also some chocolates on the tray too, but I think this is more to do with the fact that we are members of Starwood.

Guadalupe · 20/03/2010 21:42

and I am pretty sure there was juice and biscuits in the room , apparently for the children - that's why I assumed that about the kettle

dinkystinky · 20/03/2010 21:42

Aloevera - at places like that you need to call ahead to request a kettle (which often comes with a free hospitality tray) etc. We went to Ickworth's sister hotel when DS1 was 16 months old - got v pissed off at paying money for kids meals he didnt eat so went and bought some food from supermarket for him to eat in the room in the evenings - and made me resent the stay a whole lot less...

orienteerer · 20/03/2010 21:42

YANBU, however if you stay in theDower House you get self catering facilities on a half board basis.

aloevera · 20/03/2010 21:42

guadalupe - there were still the free apples in a bowl on the corridor and we indulged in at least £1.50's worth. This makes me feel better.

No i'd be well peed off.

I stayed at Bluestone in pembrokeshire once. supposed to be four star accommodation. No iron. I had a black tie do to go to and had to iron my silk dress with my GHDs.

Ladymuck · 20/03/2010 21:43

Can't remember whether there used to be kettles or not? Definitely didn't have to pay for bikes though.

Whatley Manor doesn't have kettles, but also doesn't charge for bringing you tea and coffee. Seemed hilarious as 2 members of staff would come to the room with the most enormous tray.

dinkystinky · 20/03/2010 21:43

p.s. only found out by trial and error that calling ahead to request certain things stopped me hating be on holiday at places like that.

Guadalupe · 20/03/2010 21:44

lol - yes there are only so many green apples you can eat I suppose.

aloevera · 20/03/2010 21:48

note to self: call ahead for kettle and pack good quality hair straighteners for ironing emergencies.

And I've just realized I could have got a 10% mn discount too. That would have covered a couple of coffees...

Aloevera - DH and I love Ickworth (in fact we spent our 'honeymoon' having a long walk in the NT bit there) and have always hoped to stay at the hotel one day. V to hear it wouldn't actually be quite as good as I hoped.

So YANBU and I'd have given DS a bit of whatever we were having for breakfast rather than payig their £3!

Morloth · 21/03/2010 10:58

Ickworth is a von Essen isn't it?

At the Woolley Grange one there isn't anything in the room but they do bring a coffee/tea tray (along with the paper) in the morning and it didn't cost any extra.

Dear god I love Woolley Grange. I might have to get a job again just so I can afford another weekend there!

Remembers handsome young man bringing me scones and tea in front of the fire while enthusiastic nannies bounced around with the boy somewhere else............

MmeLindt · 21/03/2010 10:59

I love this kettle in room thing that the Brits have. It is not done on the continent (unless they specifically cater to Brits) and I really enjoy staying in hotels in UK.

There is something comforting about coming home from a long days sightseeing to make a cup of tea.

YANBU, it is part of British culture, so should ALWAYS be available, regardless of the price of the room.

Morloth · 21/03/2010 11:00

DS always drinks the little milk pods. Is very annoying.

diddl · 21/03/2010 11:01

Perhaps having kettle in the room is seen as downmarket/being part of a large chain?

Guadalupe · 21/03/2010 11:02

Leeloo - we had a lovely 'honeymoon' there. Although I guess being on honeymoon we were pretty happy whatever.

The spa was amazing. It was term time too so we had free use of the bikes, empty for for dcs and so on. Sunny picnics..

TrillianAstra · 21/03/2010 11:30

I'd expect a fridge with fresh milk for those prices.

piratecat · 21/03/2010 11:35

what a rip off, my god!!!
