to cut my hair against DH & DD's wishes?

I've had long curly hair since I was about 14. Every few years I get fed up with the washing, drying, mousse, serum routine and chop it all off, drastically short. It suits me and I like it, but I always sort of miss my long hair and grow it out again.

Right now I so want to cut it. I'm thinking of going out in the summer without loads of hot sweaty hair round my neck.

DH likes women with long hair. He's lovely, and would never say anything about it, but I know he likes my hair long. DD is more forthright - she says she likes my hair long and doesn't want me to cut it.

AIBU to have it cut? I'm 42 and I think that at some point, long hair looks a bit odd on an 'older' woman. So I don't know if I'd grow it back again this time. I'm sort of thinking maybe I should leave it for a couple more years.

And then get a blue rinse

Gah! you are feeding my fear too....

I'll be 42 in june and my fairly curlyish hair is long...V LONG!

I don't do much to it, never really have the time to dry it, straighten it, except on special occasions. Sure it looks OK, but if I let the hair down, it annoys the crap out of me..

It's time to face facts isn't it? It's time to accept that long hair is behind us... tee hee!

I've booked with a good hairdresser (apparently) one who will be honest and do what's right for the style... I'll submit to his whim, and see what's what...

DH says leave it as it is, mum, sister and DS (4) say leave it, but people always resist change....

April 10th.... that's Chopday for me....

nooooooooooo! don't do it! i did last month and i hate it i did it for a reason though, my curls have been ruined by 5 yrs of ghd's so i thought if i cut it shorter the curls would magically bounce back.

they didn't

so now i am stuck with not straight but definitely not curly shoulder length ugliness

sorry, went off on a tangent, tis a sore subject. i'll have your curls if you don't want them

Ladies, I had a big chop in November, and posted a thread at the time to get some style ideas. Glad I did it, although still searching for various alternative shorter styles. If you get more than 10 inches off, why not consider donating your hair to littleprincesses - a charity that makes wigs for children who've lost their hair?

P.S. need photos please.

Condensedmilkaddict · 20/03/2010 01:02

My friend has very long curly hair. She has just turned 40, and it is looking a bit too young for her now... Not saying it is the same for you though.
Maybe you could compromise and go shoulder length? That's what I did when I cut my long hair at 30. In hindsight it may have been a bit too young, but I dread the whole mutton/lamb tag.

jasper · 20/03/2010 01:02

cut it

MmmCoffee · 20/03/2010 01:33

at jasper, you don't mince words do you!

It's a bit layered so not long enough to donate, DD did that 3 years ago though, I was so proud of her.

addict I don't compromise! Last time I had a #4 clipper on the back & sides and the top cut a bit longer. I loved it!

The only thing I'm worried about is how fast the grey highlights will show up. Don't think I'll get away with dyeing enhancing the shine every two months any more.

My appointment is for Monday

I just got my long hair cut last summer, to shoulder length. Several cuts since and it is bit shorter now, and much easier to care for. I usually wore it up anyways. I kept it long for dh for years, but he likes now as well. And it is so much easier to care for. I wish I had done it sooner.
Beside,it is hair and can grow back.

LetThereBeRock · 20/03/2010 11:48

YANBU. If you want to cut it then cut it. It's your hair not your dh's.

TottWriter · 20/03/2010 11:54

I can remember my mum getting all her hair cut off when I was ten, so she would have been 40. It was long before that, and she didn't compromise either - she came home and it was about two inches long.

I can remember crying because I didn't want it to be gone (and she had given no warning that it would), but after a few days I was completely fine with it. She's never gone back, and I now find it hard to imagine her any other way.

She didn't have to worry about a DH though, as my parents had split two years before. In your case I would possibly suggest doing it in stages so your DH has time to adjust, especially if you don't think you'll grow it back again. After all, appearances do change over time, but the loss of all your long hair will be a big culture shock. Then again, I don't know what your DH is like. It could be that he'll actually be fine with it when he sees it.

darkandstormy · 20/03/2010 12:58

cut it.It is your hair, have it how you like it.I have had short hair for years dh prefers it longer, but then its not his hair.A really good shortcut would be so flattering.I used to love connie from Holby Citys hair ,she has curly hair. She has grown it out now,it puts years on her imo. not sure where you would find a piccie of her but google actress amanda mealing.Even if you dont like it short grow it out.Hair is for experimenting with.check out Halle Berrys funky crop, gorgeous. So much better than that long wig style she used to sport

MmmCoffee · 23/03/2010 23:23

I did it! It was down way below my shoulders, had about 8" cut off - the hairdresser hacked off about 6" in chunks before she even started 'styling'!

I think it's even shorter than DH's.

BTW, DH and DD said they hate it. And then in bed last night, I woke up with DH's hand in the back of my hair, stroking the short bits!

Oh and I did add a photo on my profile, just for a couple of days.

Easy - we can swap husbands. Mine likes short hair and sighs when I'm growing it (as I am now). They'll never know.

GeekyGirl · 23/03/2010 23:49

I always think if long hair suits your face when you're young, it will still suit you when you're older ... so I don't think anyone should cut their hair just because they're in their forties. I think it's a Western cultural thing to associate long hair with youth - there are loads of older Asian women with really long hair and I never look at them and think oh you're too old to have long hair.
