I am a foster carer. The children we look after at the moment are due to leave us in June/July. We always go abroad in August each year. This year though because we will have new children with us and we don't know wether they will have passports we have decided to stay in the UK.
We decided on a caravan holiday. Now while our children absolutely love this type of holiday I'm not so keen. To make it bearable we always book the best accomodation possible which means booking ahead.
So I phoned a resort and was told of a privately owned van which would be ideal.
I phoned the owner to book. I asked the lady if the van was available in August for 2 adults and 6 children, it was and she began to take my details. She then asked for the names and ages of the children. I gave her details for my 3 dc but said as I was a fc I could not give details of the other 3 as they were not with me yet.
At this point sounding absolutely horrified she said "oh I don't think I can have that sort of child in my van, they might cause damage or upset the other residents".
After telling her to stuff her van I put the phone down, but I am so mad. My children are not bad they have had bad things done to them by the adults in their lives. Even if they are a little excitable I am perfectly capable of keeping them under control.
I'm so angry I keeping wishing for bad things to happen to her caravan. I know it is her right not to let anyone stay in her van so AIBU to hate her for her crap attitude.

Nasty woman! And what DOES she need the names of the children for?!

Had she given the matter some thought she would have realised that an experienced foster carer is more than able to take care of her charges. For Heaven's sake, you have been checked out for suitability to the nth degree, which is more than a mother of natural born children like myself have.

Name and shame.

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 00:09

That's horrendous. I can't believe she wanted childrens names?!

I'll gladly post a scathing review if you happen to link her site on to mn.

Bitch.

Hope her caravan rots

What an absolute cow. I would write to the company who own the site and tell them that you are thinking of giving the site a poor review because of her behaviour. I'm sure they will tear a strip off speak to her.

YANBU
It's small minded people like her that we need less of in this world - and then children who hadn't had such a good start in life will not be judged for the rest of it just because they were in foster care by people like her.
For god's sake!

I would love to give her details but to be fair she didn't actually say I couldn't book. When she said "that sort" we didn't get any further with the booking because I lost it and told her what an insensitive cow she was and to stuff her van.
Maybe I could have talked her round by promising to keep them under control or maybe not.

Anyway if I post her details she may sue me.

We have now booked another caravan and I'm sure the children (if not me) will have a fab time.

Mad thing is looking around me now, of the six children it's my own youngest causing the most trouble. She has just drawn all over the new playroom rug with red crayon. lol

ooh you should read 'The Inn at Lake Devine' by Elinor Lipman.

It's about a little girl whose family get a shitty letter from a hotel owner becuase they are Jewish.

The little girl grows up, marries the horrible woman's son (who is lovely), inherits the hotel, and transforms it.

It's all very 'vengeance is sweet', and nobody gets hurt, although they do eat some alarmingly big dinners up in those Catskills. And don't ask me what shuffleboard is.

Very sad.
And probably typical of the view of all too many people. Just to add to everything else the poor children have endured from adult behavour. And not a good example in being a civil reasonable human being, either.

If you encounter anything like this again, try and be cool and collected and explain how you as an experienced fm are equally in control of ALL your children, you re sorry to hear that prejudice and discrimination is just another thing that disadvantaged children must endure, and sadly for her, you won't be supporting such a view with your rental ££.
