I know loads of people complain about people who work in shops, nurses, bus drivers etc. calling them 'love', 'pet', 'darling' etc. But I really like it, especially when nurses do it when you're having a blood test or some other slightly icky procedure. Makes me feel comforted!

Me too.

KurriKurri · 17/03/2010 21:08

I like it too. (Have been known to do it myself).

rastababi · 17/03/2010 21:08

Me three.

PersonalClown · 17/03/2010 21:09

I like it but that maybe because it reminds me of my nan and old family friends from London that say it all like second nature.

CymbidiumHybrid · 17/03/2010 21:09

I do it all the time at work and i'm always getting called, gorgeous, darling, sweetheart, love, honey, sweetie etc by the fellas.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

BrahmsThirdRacket · 17/03/2010 21:11

I am physically incapable of calling anyone by these names, I'm just not the right sort of person and don't have the right kind of voice. Would like to be able to though

I do it at work too...

KatieScarlett2833 · 17/03/2010 21:15

One of my nicest memories was walking past a building site when I was about 19, bracing myself for the rude remarks, when one of the builders called out "Good morning, princess." It made my week.

differentID · 17/03/2010 21:15

No- I don't like it as it seems a bit patronising. I should also add that living in South Wales, there are numerous occasions when I get "alright love?" blared at me when I'm minding my own business, and I don't appreciate it.

I will admit to my own hypocrisy though and say I do use sweetheart when talking to children I don't know as in "excuse me sweetheart, can I get by please?"

I call a fair few of the children I work with (a teacher) 'my love' or 'poppet'. It can really disarm teenagers, and with some of the more unfortunate children I work with (I work in a rough school) it can really work wonders, I sometimes think it is the only affection they hear!

To other adults in the street, shops etc I wouldn't...it would seem odd as I'm not that old. Well, I actually am getting old (29), but would still feel too young in comparison to most!

I like it. It tells you which part of the country you are in. In Cornwall you will be called 'my lover', I visit my mother and I am 'duck', in the NE I am 'pet' and so on. I would be sad to see it go, just because people want to stand on their dignity. I don't see that it matters.

pigletmania · 17/03/2010 21:49

YANBU I love it when used in a nice way! It really nice and comforting and shows someone genuinly cares.

wotdoido · 17/03/2010 22:11

I don't really do it myself. Except to children. However, an old guy said good morning princess to me the other day and it really cheered me up.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 17/03/2010 22:16

I admit to calling people 'love' all the time. But I am crap with names, and common as muck so it does save me some embarrassment. I guess it is a regional thing, as I tend to get called love quite a bit as well.

mydoorisalwaysopen · 17/03/2010 22:56

I accidentally called a call centre girl darling the other day. She sounded quite taken aback.

elliedodger · 17/03/2010 22:57

I especially like it when I get called 'bab' or 'duck' when I'm back home in the Midlands.

I don't have the sort of voice where I could get away with saying it though. I type it in messages though.

helibee · 18/03/2010 02:24

i love it, makes me feel special, even when i know they say it to everyone

SirBoobAlot · 18/03/2010 02:55

Ohhh me too It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy! I go round with a stupid smile on my face for quite a while if someone does this. Am smiling now just thinking about it needy emotion

Tortington · 18/03/2010 02:59

i like it

however i can't stand 'mate' (said by a man)

it completely defeminises me and i hate it

sherby · 18/03/2010 03:44

I love it

My nan (Liverpudlian) always calls me Queenie

Triggles · 18/03/2010 08:21

I don't mind it at all. There are certainly worse things people could say, right?

Birdistheword · 18/03/2010 08:26

Oh i say bab, sweetheart and love all the time, am from the midlands and also common as muck

SirBoobAlot · 18/03/2010 08:49

Ohhh Custy that gets on my wick as well.
