oops, my first message seems to be deleted. this is what it said...

my hair is very thin and damaged at the best of times. it comes out a lot when brushing and is very split and dry and just horrid really. its been like this or years

my friend showed me an article the other day about Sodium Laureth Sulphate and how bad it is particularly for hair and its in most shampoos

ive just spent £4.50 on a bottle of Organic shampoo to give it a try for a while and see if my hair improves over the next couple of months.

this chemical however is in all my nice bubble baths, shower gels, basically anything that foams up as this is what the chemical is for.

I try to BUT you have to be careful. Lots of organic shampoos still have SLS in them Don't be fooled by teh organic tag.
I love Weleda - especially teh citrus shower creme ( often on special offer in Waitrose). Also try the NAked range which can be found in Boots. Oh, and the Horns/Halo range for kids.

solo · 15/03/2010 15:49

Juicychops, have you tried the supplement for hair and nails that you can get in Holland & Barrett? My SIL uses it and her hair is so much thicker now.

Ledodgy · 15/03/2010 15:49

I use the Burt's Bees shampoo and conditioner the colour keeper ones. They are expensive but last for months and my hair is long. My hair has never been in better condition, people keep complimenting me on it. They are SLS free as well.

BeckyBook · 15/03/2010 15:51

I will ONLY allow stuff into the house when it doesn't contain any of the following:

  • sodium lauryl sulphate
  • sodium laureth sulphate
  • propylene glycol
  • any parabens
  • any 'fragrance'
  • disodium EDTA
  • petroleum byproducts such as glycerine, petrolatum, paraffin etc.

It's something that makes me quite upset actually, the extent to which we are prepared to poison ourselves in pursuit of looking good. The advertising industry relies on making women feel so shit about themselves that they will blindly purchase whatever they have been conditioned to believe will make them more attractive and therefore worthwhile.
And don't get me started on most children's products...
I also find it upsetting that people assume 'oh that stuff couldn't possibly be harmful, otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to sell it'. Um hello cigarettes anyone?

So no, you are NOT being unreasonable. You are being reasonable, intelligent, sane and informed. Congratulations.

juicychops · 15/03/2010 15:53

think il look into the Burt's Bees range. i looked in Boots and think i did look at that Naked range but all of what i looked at had SLS in it. i did look at something in Boots which said 97% organic - was that the Naked range that im getting mixed up with something else? anyway, this 97% organic thing didn't have SLS but had a huge list of chemical looking things in it so decided not to go for it.

never even considered hair and nail supplements. which brand is it your SIL uses solo?

I have tried the Balance Me range too - but didn't like the smell of the various products. Some baby range too now don't have SLS and are very mild.

I am trying to rebalance years of hair dying ( yes , with hideously strong chemicals - I know!!!)

bran · 15/03/2010 15:54

juicychops, try Burt's Bees shampoo. It's expensive but I only buy a couple of bottles a year. I use the very volumising shampoo. I think the conditioner is over-priced for the effect it has so don't usually use it. Massaging in coconut oil (let it melt on the palms of your hands first) and leaving it for a bit before washing out really helps. If you leave it in overnight wrap an old towel around your pillow.

I use SLS-free shower gel too. At the moment I'm using Cath Kidston but I also like African black soap

Finbar · 15/03/2010 15:55

BeckyBook - what ranges/ products do you go for? -am interested.

BeckyBook · 15/03/2010 15:56

I buy all my stuff here

ppeatfruit · 15/03/2010 15:56

try googling earth clinic there are recipes for yr own shampoos etc. on there.

Also if you acupress you scalp every day it thickens yr. hair and stops it falling out (I do it and it works very well)

we have actually done what you say. YANBU at all; i hate the way the firms pretend to care and even put in baby products ffs.

ppeatfruit · 15/03/2010 15:58

That last sentence should read "The firms even put SLS in BABY products ffs."

solo · 15/03/2010 16:01

It has the H&B label on it juicy.

pigsinmud · 15/03/2010 16:03

BeckyBook - that stuff looks gorgeous, but it costs a fortune. I'd love to follow your rules, but I don't think we can afford it for 6 of us!!

solo · 15/03/2010 16:04

Does Fairy washing up liquid have anything horrible in it? my Grandad always washed his hair in that.

Juicychops, I'll have a look at what it is actually called...

solo · 15/03/2010 16:06

High strength Silica Complex for hair and nails.

magnoliamom · 15/03/2010 16:24

"This website is very helpful. It has a lot of good information about which chemicals to avoid and why. I usually buy Waitrose own brand, Weleda, and Burts Bees for myself and ds www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/"

Bumnoise · 15/03/2010 16:50

I use Nirvana/Pure Nirvana stuff and it's really nice.

www.nirvananatural.co.uk/index.php

Usually find it in larger Boots and Tescos.

juicychops · 15/03/2010 16:51

I'd like to know a good conditioner too-will check these out. I tried Burt's but didn't like it. (The shampoo was ok)

I've also been hard pressed to find a paraben and pthalate (sp?) free lotion that I could actually stand the smell of and have found this. The Lemon Cream lotion smells heavenly IMO.

sasamaxx · 15/03/2010 17:14

I love Weleda too - I like the magic fairy bubble bath for thie kids, and also get the earthfriendly baby one.

I bought a bottle of the waitrose baby bath the other day as on first inspection it seemed quite good (and is very cheap) but I still need to have a proper look at it.

sasamaxx · 15/03/2010 17:19

Actually - having a look at the neals yard bath oil I got for mothers' day, it looks quite good too...

sasamaxx · 15/03/2010 17:20

Not wanting to hijack but after trying 3 different weleda moisturisers, none are quite rich enough for my dry forehead - does anyone know of a good, nourishing moisturiser which is nasties-free?

CheerfulYank · 15/03/2010 17:31

Follow the link on my above post sasa, you might find something.

solo · 15/03/2010 17:41

I very occasionally get a dry patch of skin and find that both washing in and moisurising in Aqueous cream is very good...I don't have a clue what's in it though.
