I have just booked an eye test and it turned out i am on yearly recall and this only happens if that is a problem.

When i had the exam the optician said there was no problem, but as expected, i needed glasses. New opticians and quite a few years since last ones done.

Been trying to get back in touch with them (tesco) but the woman said that there was something written on my card but she couldnt understand it - she said IF the optician on duty would decipeher it he would get back to me??

WTF??? I suffer from health anxiety and im about pulling my hair out now.

Please someone tell me that if he had picked up something awful he would have told me at the time?? Very worried, feel sick, not sure if taken my meds(citalopram) or not but feel very anxious indeed. Wish i never made the appt, only did so because i want new glasses because these tesco ones, despite beind designer frames, are shit.

Please don't post anything worrying, will tip me over the edge - i'm literally shaking with fear as it is

This is complete nonsense - everyone with glasses gets recalled yearly for a check-up. Calm down at once! That's an order.

SheWillBeLoved · 15/03/2010 14:16

And breathe they can't just let you walk out of your eye exam knowing that there is a problem, and telling you everything is fine.

mumblechum · 15/03/2010 14:17

Dearie me you really do need to calm down! It must be something boringly routine or they would have told you last year.

Are you getting any treatment for your anxiety? If not I think you really need to try to get a referral.

Poledra · 15/03/2010 14:18

My children get recalled yearly, as I have spectacles, as does DH, so they are checked regularly just in case. It's not something to worry about.

MmeLindt · 15/03/2010 14:18

Stop worrying.

The optician probably had terrible handwriting, and has written something that the assistant cannot decipher. She wants to know what that is before she speaks to you.

Maybe he used your card as an impromptu shopping list.

Iklboo · 15/03/2010 14:19

I get yearly call backs for the optitian too. If anything was wrong the optitian would have told you about it at the time.

MmeLindt · 15/03/2010 14:19

It says, 'Nice Ham' or something innocuous

thumbwitch · 15/03/2010 14:20

Lots of opticians do annual recalls, especially if you haven't been for a long while and your prescription has changed a fair bit since your previous test - I really would relax about it.

Mscombobulated · 15/03/2010 14:21

they said the optician is back at 2 and would ring, but they havent rung back, shall i ring them??

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 15/03/2010 14:21

When my mum's optician "found something" (the beginnings of glaucoma, in her case) he told her right away. You probably have nothing to worry about.

doesntplaywellwithothers · 15/03/2010 14:25

Yeah...I have a yearly recall, too, so it's probably nothing to worry about.

ant3nna · 15/03/2010 14:28

I'm on 6 monthly recalls at the opticians. There is nothing wrong with my eyes but they like to make sure that my contact lenses aren't causing any damage and that they are still suitable.

Before I had the contact lenses, I was on yearly recall.

Mscombobulated · 15/03/2010 14:30

going to ring them back cant stand waiting

waitingforbedtime · 15/03/2010 14:30

Replied on the other thread.

Seriously - STOP worrying. You are working yourself into a state over nothing. You just seem to be panicking and panicking - you need to learn some coping techniques. You need to breathe and think rationally. try and do that whilst you wait for the optician to call.

I have had health anxiety - sometimes you need to be tough with yourself and think through things.

slightlycrumpled · 15/03/2010 14:32

As a general rule it is a two year recall. HOWEVER if your prescription had changed and they felt it may need changing again quite soon they would put that on an annual recall.

Honestly, they would have told you if it was anything to worry about, it may even be a family history question that meant they wanted to see you more frequently.

Please, please don't worry about it.

notquitenormal · 15/03/2010 14:34

Dp and I are on yearly recall. Fairly bog standard cases of astigmatism and short-sightedness respectively.

As far as I can make out it's because they wouldn't otherwise be able to charge us for another eye test or have the chance to try and flog us a new pair of glasses.

Kaloki · 15/03/2010 14:35

Another one on yearly recall. You don't want to be wearing glasses that aren't the right prescription (she says wearing glasses that are a few years old - and most definitely the wrong prescription )

swanandduck · 15/03/2010 14:36

I wear contact lenses and am on yearly recall. If there was a serious problem they would tell you, not just decide to check your eyesight every year without keeping you in the loop.

Mscombobulated · 15/03/2010 15:38

i spoke to the optician and tbh im even more worried now - he said that the other optician noticed some "spots" on the back of my eyes but wasn't overly concerned as this may be "normal" for me - but needed monitoring to ensure it wasnt something developing I asked why i wasn't told at the time - he said and i quote "he probably didn't want to worry me" I have bought my eye test forward to tomorrow morning, but am really worried. He did say that the optician wasn't concerned as my eyesight is good - it can't be that good, i coujldnt see to type this without my glasses!!!

I am just worried it could be something really sinister - but surely if there was even a suggestion of that (the C word) they would have told me and made a refferal, even if it was something that would only develop with time - also it was both eyes.

V pissed off, i think if there is a problem then i should be informed about it

YES

lovechoc · 15/03/2010 15:56

Please just breathe in deeply, and exhale. Do this several times because you are getting yourself worked up over something you have no control over.

Wait until tomorrow morning to see what they have to say to you in person. Keep focused on other activities unrelated to opticians until then - please give yourself a break!

MmeLindt · 15/03/2010 15:59

Please try and calm down. If the optician was really worried, he would have called you straight back in.

Opticians are humans too, they sometimes are a bit unsure of a diagnosis and want a second look, or a second opinion.

Mscombobulated · 15/03/2010 16:02

i hate this, i woke up anxious this morning, why did i have to bother with the fucking eye test anyway - its only because i fancy some new glasses and thought it best to have a test because i feel my eyes have gotten worse.

So pissed off with this anxiety - whats the worse that can happen? If there had been anything "worth worrying me" about then the optician would have told me - although i still think he should have told me about the fucking result, especially as i specifically asked at the time (i know i asked because being the OCD anxiety freak that i am it was playing on my mind, so after he looked at the back of my eyes i asked) he told me there was no problem FFS Logically i know it is OTT for me to be reacting like this, i just can't stand not knowing stuff - i have no control over it, which is what scares me - i can't go anywhere near a hospital i don't think - maybe i should just stick my head in the sand. I know, im being pathetic but i can't help it.

Someone please tell me what i have done with the bachs rescue remedy???

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 15/03/2010 16:03

you really do need to get a grip and calm down - i worked in optics for 10 years - please please rest assured that if there was anything untoward at all that could be cause for concern they would not have let you go a full year without recalling you. its quite standard to test at yearly intervals for all kinds of reasons from there being a family history of glaucoma to the optom simply wanting to see how quickly your eyes alter - so please do stop worrying - your making something out of nothing.

Mscombobulated · 15/03/2010 16:06

Vicar, he said i have some spots on both eyse, my DP did make me laugh when i told him, saying "but you don't get spots how can you have them on your eyes" bless!! he did say that it is quite normal for some people and that he wasn't untowardly worried as my eyesight is good not sure i get that, i need glasses! Although technically only for distance, i do feel a bit disorientated without them. I just have visions of being told i have some sort of tumour (smacks one self up the side of the head for stupidity, but thats whats really bothering me - anything else i can deal with). I am overweight too and reckon my BP is on the high side, diabetes?
