Fecking freecycle

Our local branch got a stern message from the freecycle mod telling some users to stop treating it 'like a poor man's Argos' . There were so many repeated requests for things.

I do love it though, I got a really nice old sewing machine last month and a new (to me) basin for my bathroom. No one ever seems to want the stuff I offer though maybe it's because I don't have a 50" HD TV or a Bugatti Veyron spare.

I once offered a load of baby clothes - carefully folded and bagged them and the woman came, rifled through, picked out a few bits and left without a word of thanks.

Just looked at ours now and someones put a 'wanted' on for 'job lot of stuff I can sell at car boot'

Jamieandhismagictorch · 15/03/2010 14:37

Oh Dear ........

< thinks about asking for money on freecyle >

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/03/2010 14:37

Our mods often post a message asking to be aware that the first person to respond might be someone who uses freecycle for a living.

Yes it's about reducing landfill but I'd rather my things go to a home that needs them rather than a boot seller/ ebayer

LOL - I've actually listed a job lot of stuff suitable for car boot sale before

Iklboo · 15/03/2010 14:40

loving 'crazy jam fraud'

I sense a cryptic facebook status comin up...

SoupDragon · 15/03/2010 14:42

Not only that, I have another car boot box accumulating in my garage for Freeecycle - odds and sods that no one would come and get singly.

Intergalactic · 15/03/2010 14:47

Ours has just recently introduced a new rule whereby you can only make four 'wanted' posts a month (which I still think is excessive, but the other options in the vote were 10 per month and unlimited). This was directly following a flurry of about 15 wanted posts in one day from the same person requesting all manner of specific high-spec things for her new house!

I tend to only offer things that couldn't be sold on (lots of body lotion that I'd received as gifts over the years and would never get round to using, none of it very fancy) or things that I'm just so pleased to get rid of, I don't care if someone is selling them on for a profit. I hate car boot sales with a passion - if someone else wants to get up at some ungodly hour and haggle with grasping skinflints for a few quid then good for them!

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/03/2010 15:49

The 'wanteds' on my local group were getting a bit ridiculous (expensive stuff, colour/brand specified), culminating in a request for diamonds. I think it was someone being sarcastic, but I stil lcan't really be sure ...

Jamieandhismagictorch · 15/03/2010 16:37

Maybe they should just stop wanted adverts on freecycle then, if people can't be trusted to be reasonable.

Hassled · 15/03/2010 16:44

I like the crazy jam fraud idea. I might see if it's a goer. It has to be less hassle than reselling freecycled stuff.

WhereYouLeftIt · 15/03/2010 18:33

I don't mind the 'wanted' ads though, they can spur me to offer something that I've forgotten I had or hadn't considered anyone could possibly want. And some of them, how else would the wanter get the item? I've seen wanteds for spare parts for obsolete computers; broken watches for an arts project; small amounts of leftover paint; or old magazines for children to cut pictures from. Freecycle can't really be beaten for these sort of things.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 16/03/2010 08:15

Shame there isn't a light bulb turning on emoticon. I understand now. I am envious of your freecycle. The closest thing we have in Switzerland is the brokenhaus. You take the stuff you no longer want or need and the women on the desk will either acccept or reject it. The accepted stuff is then sold cheaply. Most things are sold by our broki, furniture, clothing, kitchen stuff etc. But everything I take is rejected which means I have to pay to recycle it. This is particularly annoying as we are moving to Belgium and I don't forsee a great need for three pairs of skis.
