To still be worried

Today my dd rang me to tell me they were just back from the hospital.Dgs[3.6] had choked on a polo mint, gone blue and floppy finally vomited and was semi conscious by the time the ambulance arrived.Dd and her dh had tried over the knee back slapping etc and were so very scared[I was out for the day with dh].Dgs was a bit better when paramedics saw him but they took him to hosp where he was examined by an ENT specialist who explained that the red dots in his eyes and round his nose were the same as if he had been strangled.ENT doc said he was fine [gave him a little torch to keep].They all went home dgs had a sleep, demanded sandwiches, walked to the shop and told me on the phone what fun it was in the ambulance.But.....where is the polo mint?Dd is certain it wasnt coughed or vomited out but surely if it was stuck in his larynx it cant have gone to his stomach. What if it has been sucked into his lungs?I am so worried but hope someone here can reassure me.

What did the doctor say about it?

what a nasty shock

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 14/03/2010 19:44

It wouldn't have gone into his lungs, the windpipe leading to them are not wide enough for a polo to pass through into the lungs, that's why it got stuck.

How scary for you.

Thanks for replies-the doc said it must have been coughed into his oesophagus and swallowed-he said the main danger was that it had possibly lacerated his larynx but apparently it hadnt-I'm meant to be minding him tomorrow so will see for myself.I bet dd wont forget this Mothers Day in a hurry.

he will have coughed it into the food pipe and swallowed it

so scary...my dc's laugh at me not allowing them "choking sweets" until they were over the age of 8 !!

pranma · 14/03/2010 21:13

He isnt allowed other boiled sweets at all but loves[d] Polo mints-he's had his last one for a while!

aww pranma your poor dd and gs! What a day. Agree, don't worry the drs would not have discharged him if there were any doubt that mint was stuck somewhere it shouldn't be.

So that's him off any kind of hard sweetie until he's about 15 then!

pranma · 14/03/2010 22:01

Absolutely I am beginning to want to suggest a diet of smoothies

I won't even let my DH have boiled sweets in the car... I choked very badly as a 10 yr old and the experience scared me stiff...
Glad your DGS is ok now...
