That I was a little annoyed when the lady in Spar didn't tell me I had to pay for carrier bags before I bought my shopping on a card and left me stranded with two armfuls of heavy items!

I'm a being unreasonable ?

I went to out local spar for essentials (milk, pop, wine, tin of beans etc) and paid on a credit card. I was half expecting the lady to ask 'would you like a bag'... but no, she just stood there and stared, so I asked 'can I have a bag please'. She replies: 'they cost now, 3p each' (in a less than friendly tone).

I would have thought that she should have asked if I would like to have bought a couple of bags (which I wouldn't have minded doing) BEFORE I pay on a card because I'm out of cash (and therefore using a credit card).

I ended up carrying everything to the car in my two arms and had to pretty much juggle it all as I unlocked car.

Normally I'm not a petty person, but this really 'gave me the 'ump' !

no you're not shiney - the bags I mean are the rough brown ones - Mrs C bought lots of them, because we always forget to take them with us! Bit like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemp-sack,asabukuro,japan.JPG

Ah I stand corrected by the ever informative Mrs C - the bags are Jute....

The pop was for Mrs C, who I believe spends a lot of time on your shiney thread.....

YANBU. At our local shop they try and shovel everything into carrier bags before you get the chance to triumphantly produce your carefully hand-woven-from-lentils guilt salving effort. They get a cob on having to decant the stuff into it and glare at you. Tesco Metro does not do middle-class environmental angst at all.

cockneydad · 13/03/2010 22:51

Thanks Shiney and BitOf!

I thought you work out who I was Shiney !

Dear oh dear - the bleach would have been diluted down to parts per bugga all by the time it got near the poor fishes! Sadly there is a lot of nonsense spouted on environmental matters, it's all about good management, and some basic common sense science (here endeth the lecture).

Recycling is probably a good thing for glass, tin cans, paper, metal some plastics - not convinced by the way a lot of councils do it though...

Yes Mrs C needs her pop - it really is an essential requirement

Don't charge for bags in our Spar or M&S. I would have stolen a basket to get the goods to the car.

cockneydad · 13/03/2010 23:03

I'll remember in case of future carrier bag disasters Bexie... good plan...

YanknCock · 13/03/2010 23:06

Bexie, our Spar didn't charge for them the last time I went in, I think it has just recently started. Which is why you'd expect the checkout lady to say something!

Good show for your first AIBU dear, you didn't get a complete pasting or anything

BexieID · 13/03/2010 23:25

Last time I bought anything in Spar, I was buying a laundry basket, so shoved my goods in there, on top of the pram, lol.

BeautifullyScreaming · 13/03/2010 23:34

Lol (but a bit passe)

FabIsDoingPrettyWell · 14/03/2010 08:15

I would have bought you 2 bags if I had been behind you.

TottWriter · 14/03/2010 08:31

YANBU. I hate that sort of petty revenge-taking some retail workers take it upon themselves to use against the people who do actually pay their wage. Like they're pitting themselves against the customers in all out battle - and I know I'm not exagerating; I've worked in food retail myself.

If they've only just started charging for bags it was doubly crappy of her. What an arse.

Rockbird · 14/03/2010 08:45

Bloody hell Nightshoe, be careful those judgy pants don't cut off your circulation... Nothing like having all the facts before you jump is there?

OP YANBU, she should have asked but I would have presented the card as well
