To consider Frontlining myself and the kids?

I am hopping with nits, as is ds2. Ds1 has a few for good measure and the only reason dh is nit-free is that he is bald.
We frontline the dogs when they get fleas and they are then protected from infestation for three months.
Having been woken up at 3am by my own head on fire with itching, knowing there is Frontline downstairs in the cupboard, would it be total madness to Frontline myself? Any vets/scientists out there to let me know for sure one way or the other, not just eco-mum anxiety? If is ok for animals, why not mums?
We've got the nitty gritty comb, the tea tree oil and have been combing daily. Also have an electric comb which only seems to get pretty large nits, not the teeny ones. But is there nothing on the market that will actually KILL nits effectively?

I feel your pain!
we used hedrin plus combing and seem to have them under control BUT I have to comb her everyday after school because you find just one adult or something in her hair. I think there must be an untreated child who keeps spreading them

I have been so very tempted when nits have been going round the class but have held off in case it acted as a neurotoxin or something

My friend who's a vet told me a story about someone who nearly killed their cat by using 'dog' frontline on them. Apparently it is very specific to both the fleas and the animals.

Sympatise about the nits - when I got them from a friend's child I used some nasty chemical from the chemist but lots of nits are resistant now. I ended up using hedrin & it worked very well.

You need to comb with conditioner every 4 days, no more often than that, for a total of 4 sessions.

Each time you comb the lice will become smaller. If you find a big one then you have a new infestation from outside of your family and you have to count that as the first session again.

Once you start this programme, you can't pass lice on to anyone else which is nice to know. If you are getting re-infestations from outside of your family you will know when this is happening and can try to address that problem - but if this is the problem then no matter what method of clearing them you use it won't stop re-infestations.

Look at this site for great advice

I used frontline about 3 years ago on both mine, we were pig sick of nits, and they've never had them since, no side effects, and i can honestly say i know other people who've done it and nits dont seem to return.
Obviously its up to you, but i wouldn't hesitate.

Frontline is birth control for fleas. It is not going to work on nits. And I wouldn't even vaguely chance it.

PorphyrophillicPixie · 13/03/2010 11:45

Hair dye kills them brilliantly. I got them often as a kid and dye was the only thing that worked for me at the time. I tried some of the more firendly ones recently after I caught them off of my charge but ended up spending stupid amounts on the stuff and none of it worked -_-

Use Hedrin, honestly. It will get rid of them all, I promise.Use it now then repeat in a week. We battled nits for years with our girls and this is the one thing that definitely works - well it did for us. They've had nits a few times in the past year and using Hedrin always works. Everything else I've tried like Lyclear, just had very little effect.

Tricky, my mother used frontline on me and my sister when we were younger... DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD THROUGH THAT! It burns the scalp and the eyes for HOURS afterwards and did NOT get rid of the nits. Please for the sake of your child do not even consider it. Get some conditioner and a nit comb.

Danthe4th · 13/03/2010 18:51

and a pair of tweezers, sit each child down in front of you and part each section of hair and squeeze each nit until it pops, its very effective with the wet combing and very satisfying!!!!!
have some tissue paper to wipe the comb and tweezers after each comb through.
Do every few days and get someone to do it to you.
Then use tea tree oil on the nape of the neck and behind the ears to stop reinfestation at school.
Check the nape of the neck and behind the ears regulary.
