To just want good old chippie food not bloody crayfish, swordfish and minted petit pois?

I've just been to the coast for the day to visit a friend

It is essential to have fish and chips at the seaside so we went to the only place that was open and I couldn't believe it.

Battered tiger prawn, swordfish, etc

fecking minted petit pois

and not a butty or bottle of ketchup in sight.

We paid £2.60 eah for a tiny portion of (admittedly lovely) chips and huffed off.

Leave chip shops alone - they don't need poncery

It makes me sad Whitstable is now poncetastic. I grew up there up until about 10 yrs ago and it was a lovely old fishing village...I spent my youth on the beach. I hear it is now Chelsea on Sea!

That would hack me right off, fish and chips is a staple! Speaking of Whitstable, my friends and I used to wander in to the local chippie in our wetsuits to get a portion of chips for lunch while dripping all over the floor...don't think we'd get away with it now! And what a waste of tiger prawns battering them is!

Oh, and we are very lucky to live right by the sea now and have a fantastic local chippie at the end of the road, no pncery in sight. Tempted to get the husband to head down there...

Gordian only says that because she is on strict diet. Poor old gordy.

agedknees · 12/03/2010 20:05

Was it a southern seaside resort? We don't have poncey chippies up north.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/03/2010 11:52

yes it was on the South East coast

There were two other 'proper' looking chip shops but they were closed.

Eh? How are Southwold and Aldeburgh not proper seaside?

cluckyduck · 15/03/2010 13:54

We live by the coast (East Sussex) and had fish and chips the other week - £27.00 for 2 large and 1 small cod and chips

We now make our own using the Jamie oilver recipe, and its GORGEOUS!

If in N Devon, go here woolacombefryer.com/ - they don't mind people like me (barefoot lardarse in a wetsuit)

OrmRenewed · 15/03/2010 16:40

How do you eat petit pois out of newspaper? Even with a wooden fork. Madness!

LetThereBeRock · 15/03/2010 16:46

I wish we had a chip shop here with a menu like this one in melbourne.

There's nothing wrong with battered fish but I would love to have the option of grilled fish instead, not because I'm a health freak, I just tend to prefer it that way, and with rice or salad instead of chips, which I'm not all that fond of.

Crazycatlady · 15/03/2010 19:31

Fish Club in Battersea and Clapham is like that Rock. It's my all time favourite treat.

In Glastonbury, near to where I grew up, there is a chip shop that is over 100 years old, still run by the same family.....AMAZING, he nicest fishcakes in the world.....Anytime i have an excuse I pop in.....

fish and chips ooop north are weird, though. Can't remember what some things were called but a fishcake was potato, fish, potato covered in batter.
